    Manwatu/Whanganui Goats/Deer Advice

    Hey all.

Have just moved from the Taranaki down to 'Friendly' Feilding and wondering where all the deer and goats are. I'm not crazy about trophy hunting, just more interested in freezer fillers for myself and my young family. I've had a squizz at the Mid Po track but didn't have much luck bush-bashing there.

I'm not asking anyone for their spot 'x' or trying to step on toes, just want to be pointed in the right direction.

    Any help is appreciated,
    Cheers all.

What sort of hunting experience do you have? Bush hunting any of the road ends in the ruahines will be productive- walk a few hundred metres up the track, head into the bush (and the wind) and you're away laughing. Walk a couple of hours in and hunt the bush/tops transition areas, there's plenty of deer floating around. Walk up the river and creek beds and glass the slips. Search up @Tahrs old posts and read them carefully, there's lots of good info there for you to join the dots and work out where to go. What worked for him back then will work for you now. There's a lot of country to discover up there, all within an hours drive of Feilding, finding the spots that consistently hold deer is all part of the experience. If you don't have any luck in the next few months, pm me. (Just bear in mind it's nearly winter, so hunt accordingly). Hot barrels.

if only you had posted this last week id have showed you a spot around reatihi but as soon as the cars fixed im heading for the frigid south. its a damn pity you cant use the river track anymore. track off the road down to diggers can be good as your straight into the feedbelt just below the good old leatherwood, hut on top last time i visited had fresh tracks around it, you can head up along the range and drop into the heads of large ck that flows below the road, always deer track down in ck bed but wind is not too good mostly.
    good luck.

Welcome to Friendly Feilding.the western side Ruahines have decent bush hunting mate if that's what you're into, from most car parks.

Plenty of hunting opportunities around here, crazy number of reds in the local southern Ruahines at the moment

Around Alice Nash Hertitage Lodge past Apiti is a popular spot around for your area, often deer there, but also often people.
East of Shannon and up towards the damns also often has something according to people who go there often.
