It was more a response to those saying that there is no use for FMJ rounds when SP's are so cheap, but then it's also a pretty safe assumption to make considering how cheap and common the SKS pattern rifles have become.

    Beavis

If you have Yugo 8x57 rounds punching holes in steel plate then it is most likely loaded with steel core projectiles.

I thought the Russians banned export of steel core projectiles and any ammo loaded with them sometime in the early 90's but with the break up of all the former soviet states I wouldn't be surprised if there is steel core projectiles in Mil Surplus rounds availible here in NZ.

Shooting steel core ammo at steel plates on our range will earn you a swift kick in the pants and a not so polite request to not use it again.

    Good feedback. Thanks everyone.
Looks like I will save the mil surplus for a zombie invasion (dream come true).
I was planning to use this on a baikal single shot.
Did take the rifle to the range yesterday and guess what...it wouldn't fire. Could hear the firing pin go click but no bang. Can't see the firing pin come out either.
The guy at reloaders did mention that this was the only issue the baikals had. Will take my rifle back to GC.

Make sure the gun is closed FIRM and pull the lever down a little to ensure
    Same issue with mine
It will click if the lever is just cracked

Talking 7.62x39 in my sks, I've had tula hallow-tips primers failing to detonate, about 1 in 10 rounds would fail. I have found the czech tracers (gun city) perform admirably. And yes the FMJ tracers will kill game effectively, look up ballistic wound profiles.

7.62x54 181gr FMJ yugo steel core surplus (and I assume most 7.62nato surplus), shooting steel-core/FMJ will punch holes right through your animal, only good if you have shot placement.

If you set fire to the countryside with tracer you better have good insurance , for this reason it is prohibited on most if not all club ranges in NZ

It is doubt full that filing too much off a tip will leave the jacket in the barrel , many have deliberatly tried to do this and have had to take the entire tip off to get a result , still it is up to you . Forster make a hollow point attachment that fits their case trimmer .

one of the most creul things Iv ever watched was someone trying to kill a horse with a sks and milsurp rounds

you will loose animals and they will die a slow death.
    highland ammo works great.
be an aweful shame to loose a freezer full of meat because you were too tight to spend $1 on that bullet

barnaul 125gn softpoints work in my norinco b/a altho the 123gn are not so well tolerated.thats life tho.s&b have ammo out also ,a packet of which is awaiting a trip up the spout of bestsy.like the others ,id drop the FMJ shit down the deepest hole i could find.be aware also milsurp is also loaded with machineguns in mind so the data can vary.OnNO account buy the 7.62x39tracer rds a certain firm is flogging off-theyve no real use in a civilian firearm and are in fact a bloody firehazard

That would be because the shooter had no idea what to do, no fault with either the rifle or the ammunition, Humane killing requires drawing an imaginary a line from left ear to right eye and right ear to left eye and firing horizontally where they intersect. Works with beefies as well but sheep are too small and require a shot down through the top of the skull into the brain area..

If my dad can do the above with a pissy .22lr, a 120gr+ FMJ from an SKS will do it. The Chinese and Yugo 7.62x39 Military ammo is meant to be prone to fragmentation, just like M193 5.56 ammo.

that is aboslutly correct, if the horse is tame or looking at you, or in a paddock
