Hi team I'm in the nelson area for work and trying to make the most of this part of the country. I was thinking of heading into either mole hut or lake matiri in hut in murchison on Saturday after work. Am I going to be wasting my time? Cheers

Lots of goats, a few deer in Matiri area.
Definitely deer on mole tops .

A route for the Ella Range via the Mole Bivy was published on the Wilderness Magazine site a few years ago.
Last visit there, the hut book indicated a steady stream of trampers and had to share the bivy for the first time.
No animals seen which was a big change, I’m guessing because of all the foot traffic along the ridge.
Figured that might be the case up there, cheers
Seems I may be a bit out of touch with the mole tops.....tho I bet the deer are still there just more nocturnal.

Have been buzzed on two occasions last night up there on the bush edges up high. A couple of flashes of the head torch on high power soon moved them on quickly. Was literally 20-30m from me both times.
Yip what he said , skip the hut to many walkers - good spot, weather is looking good too
Still the odd deer and chamois on the mole tops, as others have said it's a very busy place. I went up rotoroa in December and saw a chopper hunting the mole tops area.
Fly camping any good up there, dont have a tent at the moment just a small fly. Otherwise might go into matiri
At this time of the year fly camping would be fine. Plenty of places to hide away from wind. Quite a neat place. The faces above bull creek and the d'Urville river can be quite productive from time to time, often over looked by those seeking the valleys that drain into the Matakitaki. Haven't been into Matiri for years, was a busy place with trampers. Beautiful valley though.
Only managed to make it on top of the ridge before dark on Saturday night, made for avery interesting walk in due to the low cloud with the equally low snow polls.as I decided to go to the hut as there were no other cars at the road. Made it to the hut at 9pm, luckily it was empty. The low cloud ruined my plans so decided to try climb above it. Gladi did this as once on the top it was brilliant. Deffently worth the sore legs even though I returned empty handed.
