I haven't seen any mention of it on here so thought I'd ask.
Has anyone put in for a block?
We have been successful and have Bottom Acheron in the 5th period.
Last years thread indicates it was a poor block, but you never know.

Yeah, I put in, probably a waste of time again
Not so much a ballot, its first in first served when it opens.
Most of the blocks were gone by day 2 of applications being open.
Quite frankly the communique I have had from DOC down there was poor at best.
There are a few blocks still available on the Clarence side of the station, but id be fucked if i know how to access the blocks. Emails and phone calls to DOC were a waste of time.
@ROKTOY we had that block last year. Bare in mind it was months after the green rain we should have ditched and saved ourselves the money. Chalk it up to experience.
Easy block to get around, its a bit of a pain being back at base camp each night, DOC guy was anal AF on this and checked regularly.
Good numbers of Chamois but any deer in close proximity were far from close. Pigs were around also.
The deer we could see and hear were in Bunkers and Big Bush blocks.
I guess they got snowed under with applications, as they didn't update the availability very often. 18 days without an update made it hard to know what blocks to put in for.
I took a punt on a couple of blocks based only on easy access as we aren't as fit as we should be. Applied on the 17th, politely queried them on the 30th, got email this morning giving us a block.
All the non 1080 blocks got snapped up pretty quick. I don't think the first in first served theory is very fair.
Is it a DoC requirement to be back at the hut/base each night?
From memory it was on our permit.
TBH camping 300m from the road would put you amongst a shitload of briar. The archeron campsite was pretty good spot to set up camp. Had running water and toilets.
The pervey doc guy was a bit of a creeper and did come down most days to check on us.

Based on the info on this page...
https://www.doc.govt.nz/parks-and-re...ons-of-permit/
"Camping is not permitted in the Acheron Road corridor. You must camp at least 300 m from and out of sight of the Acheron, Clarence and Tophouse Roads, camping is allowed for the duration of this permit (7 days)."
That says to me camp where you want as long as you meet these requirements.
Also if you leave a vehicle it must be within 50 metres of the road and have a copy of your permit attached to it.
"Your permit must be carried while in Molesworth Station. If you are leaving a vehicle on the roadside, leave a copy of the permit visible on the dashboard. Vehicles may be left up to 50 m from the Acheron Rd. Make sure your vehicles are not blocking gates or access ways."
I will double check with DOC re this requirement, as it may affect our plans to fly camp in our block.
Watching you tube hunting clips on Molesworth there seems to be a few animals there.
And hunting expectations in animal numbers for the next roar are.......?
Have Five Mile, 5th period though so I imagine it would have been all scented up by then, maybe a week of shit weather beforehand might be on the wishlist. Never been in there, dont know what to expect, looks pretty barren

@Reindeer just an FYI, I queried DOC re the block and finally get these responses after a few emails going back and forward. They were pretty good to deal with,
.... Previously hunters have found that camping at Acheron and walking or driving to the block is easier, finding a park away and out of site of the Acheron corridor is not that easy for that particular block.
Hey *****, yes you can camp anywhere in your block and yes your vehicle PROVIDED it can not be seen from the road can be parked on the Acheron Corridor and yes please leave a copy of your permit in any vehicles you are taking.
Any of you fellas hunted Yarra block before? I have it first period this year
