    Morning hunt with winchester subs

Went with a mate for a hunt on doc land this morning.Stalked up to a spiker and at about 40 metres hit it in the shoulder with a winchester 165 grain subsonic. This ammo is very quiet and three shots touch at 50 metres so no prob with that.Recoil was so slight that i saw the impact and the projectile looked like it blew up on the surface, yes i hit it a bit low. Could see a 50 mm red hole in the scope, it staggered of about 50 metres us following. I followed it into thick scrub and could hear it gasping but as i went in to finish it off it took of and i followed it for a while as i could hear it and then i lost it.Meanwhile my mate shot a spiker in the neck and his also ran and when it stopped he hit it in the head. Not to impressed with the projectile as it seems a bit to fragile for reds. We walked out to the car and as we were driving of the neighbour played chicken with us so we had words, he accused us of poaching which we were not. Get to a nice spot up the road stopped for a cuppa and two police arrived, he called the cops on us. They got out of their car ar15, pistol and taser and asked us to stay where we were. Asked if we had guns ,yes and where were they. In the car we replied. They asked to see them so i pulled my rifle bag out and passed the bagged rifle to him and said you pull it out, he did then asked for the other. Both bolts were in our packs. They took our details looked at our licences and asked our story. At no time were either of them aggressive or confronting. Th bloke with the ar kept his finger out of the trigger guard all the time. They went to see the land owner to get his story and came back 20 min later satisfied with what we told them . Land owner had told them he heard our shots which was bull. There were other people poaching around there but my mate used to manage that farm and knows the boundaries. We left the police there and drove home. Alls well that ends well

thats an interesting review of the ammo......interesting in that you think its TOO frangile...not something Ive heard ANYONE think of subsonic.......the point of impact was too low you say, maybe a bit out sideways too,if you heard animal gasping,it shouldve dropped soon after, interesting you lost it....bugger you didnt have a dog to help find it..... it might be a poke it in the head or crease or dont fire at all type thing...pretty much par for the cource with subsonics.
post up some photos when your mate dresses out his deer, the internals of neck shot might give interesting tale.

Subbies are slow killers and neck and poorly placed head shots often don't put them down as there is virtually no energy compared to a standard hunting round. Lung shots are similar to being shot with a bow or even less damage. Shot a few deer and plenty of goats with them now and would certainly not recommend them as a general hunting round.
Most deer I shoot are through the lungs or in the back of the head but have a dog to find the lung shot ones. Best leaving a lung shot one for 5 mins or so after you shoot as they quite often will not travel far if they aren't disturbed.

Sounds very professional of the police, with a good dash of common sense.

Interesting take on your ammo. Is it running to slow?

Hey mate interesting findings I loaded some 308 150 gr cast hollow points the other day shot a spiker at 20 yards heard it stumble past just above me left it 30 min went back couldn’t find it no sign of blood either . Shot a hind between the eyes at 20 the next morning no problems with that one . Although the projectile come out the back of her neck no expansion to speck of exit the same size as entry . Probably not a load for hunting with unless you a a very good shot and have a dog for the find . Hillbilly

Interesting that they responded in a timely fashion to a poaching complaint, wish it occurred more often.
I exclusively use cast bullets in my 3030 at admittedly at slightly supersonic speeds 1400 to 1600 fps and find reasonable expansion even with solids having a flat nose, if they hit bone then they really do some damage. I'll look in my recovered bullet bin later and show you what I mean.
