Thread: Mountain bike, hunting, and Red Stag

There is a growing number of hunters here in the US using mountain bikes on their hunts. The lack of engine noise and the smell of petrol is allowing them to get closer to the game, mainly deer and mainly bow hunters.

Is there much use of MB in NZ for hunting? I am sure that the terrain to too rugged for their use with tahr but maybe for red deer. The use of child carriers/bike trailers have been used for hauling out the meat.

I have heard of some mountain biking for hunting in NZ, and it would be certainly doable in some areas that's for sure! Perhaps more on private land and blocks, unless you intend to use trails in or out then hunt a few hours off the track, keeping sure to not find yourself in restricted areas. It would be a very good idea for an adventure sure. Then in some areas it might just be too tough to access with a bike - in which case might just be for rides in and out rather than long distances travelling with a heavy load back to road.

I use mine to get around the pine forests (most are locked gates) to hunt pheasants and sambar. But that's in the lower and flat country, not too many places to use one in the ranges

I have used them a lot, and hope to build up a e-assist "fat" bike just for hunting/fishing

My wife was tramping into the Tablelands earlier this year, she said that they were passed by a couple of hunters on Mountain Bikes.

Brought a mtb of tardme for hunting forestry blocks, it works well and you do get closer to animals on roads etc but the best bit is the easier ride out with a pack full of meat!

I do the odd trip on the MTB, have to be a little bit careful riding with a heavy pack of gear & meat, saves a bit of time over walking in & out.

I have seen deer mountain biking, does that count? Must have a go one day...

Those must be cleaver deer. You'd think they would have trouble holding the bars.
Saw one of those Pugsleys down the Urchin track a month or so back. Good skills.
