Cool New to Nelson and in need of hunting mates

    Hi All!

My name is Gareth. I've just moved to Nelson and keen to head out hunting soon. I've been looking into heading up the Pelorus Valley for a look this weekend. Probably won't go any further than Middy Hut but is anyone able to help me out with some places worth having a look? After moving here last week, the freezer needs something in it. I'm keen to go for a meat hunt and to see if those stags are making some noise yet. I am very green in this region so I'd appreciate any help and if there are some of you other good people out there that want to go hunting sometime, let me know!! Cheers!

    Welcome to the forum Gareth.
Pelorus is probably as good as anywhere else at the moment.
Pretty much all public huntable land to the west of nelson and a lot to the south has been 1080d

Thanks for that! Good to know. It's a real shame about the 1080 around here. I have seen that there are a few fallow in the area, correct? Is it mainly bush hunting there and should I be looking around on the river flats at the right times of the day?

Hi, welcome. Theres a few fallow around the perlous. Bush stalking is the way to go. River flats are good in spring but always worth a look at the change of light.Plenty of goats in certain places and the odd pig. Few animals in behind the Middy hut and the odd red. Just go for a walk and look for sign then hunt areas again that have reasonable sign. I head that way myself end of april, may pm you when i do and you can tag along if you wish, cheers jason

Thanks for the info. I would definitely be keen to go for a hunt at the end of April. Let me know when you are going and if you don't mind I will tag along. Cheers!

I've been all over the place in recent years. The last year I've been in Auckland but as a South Islander I found it's not for me anymore. Most of my hunting has been in the Southern Ruahines around Dannevirke. Living up in the North Island gave me a chance to hunt the Kaimias, Kiamanawas and the Kawekas. I always enjoy the hunting around where I grew up in South Canterbury and Mckenzie District. Are you in Nelson Veitnamcam?
