Sergei would be proud of you two.
What other WW2 milsurp full size rifle with matching bayonet can you get for 250? Unsporterized enfeilds with matching bayo any year, go for well over 500. Ammo is still in service so availability is excellent.

Rightio, Im probably gonna take a bit of stick for this. I use an ex army .303 have done all my shooting with it.
The type of shot I typically make is pretty close, 15-50 meters.
If I could see a deer at 450 m, Id get closer.
$400 will get you a pretty good Three O. Its a fact that more deer have been shot in this country with this calibre than anything else.
You are pretty handy to the Wairarapa and Aorangi forest park (a.k.a Haurangi's) a RHA. well worth a visit.
Rimutuka's hold animals too.
Cheers,good luck,
Tony
There ya go, that'll be ideal for a first gun. Then get into a hut somewhere with a group of hunters who all have the best calibre , listen, sift through the bullshit and save up.
Good luck,
Tony
its a 303?
"I do not wish to be a pawn or canon fodder on the whims of MY Government"
So had a look in the shop today as i'm expecting my license in the mail soon, Was looking at a howa 308. bolt or a 30-30 marlin lever action, would these be a good choice?
Yeah, i would imagine the 308 would be a better round for longer distances but i keep being told most of the time my shots will be under 250 yards at the most, I'm really no expert at all i'm just starting out, Never taken a deer before.
I was liking the 30-30 because i'd imagine it would be great fun on the range as well and i'm not a big fan of synthetic stocks, love the wood and metal feel. I'm pretty stuck!
Personally. 30-30 lever action are just fine for John Wayne lookalikes or pig hunting.
If you want to be sure that that the deer in your sights is going to fall over dead, at any range you are comfortable shooting at, don't get a 30-30.

Haha I might suit the cowboy look!
But personally I just want a good all rounder, Something cheap to shoot and will humanely take anything at a realistic range, I'm no Simo Hayha!
GET THE HOWA!
Then when you feel like it you can uprade the stock to whatever.
"Hunting and fishing" fucking over licenced firearms owners since ages ago.
308Win One chambering to rule them all.
The Japanese make good rifles out of good steel. A Howa in calibre of choice will, as a rule, make an excellent hunting rifle.
