Thread: Newbie to Hunting In Canterbury

Hi my names Matt 30 male and just getting started out after hunting as a kid. Have just joined NZHS and am relatively new to hunting.

I got my license last year and have a Ruger 270 currently. I have done some hunting down in Otago but only on private farmland. I am looking to get some advice on Public land hunting in Canterbury and ideally someone I could tag along with and keep learning hunting/bushcraft. I’m not asking for anyone’s GPS coordinates just a starting point as I’m happy to get walking and glassing. Any info would be appreciated and a
Hunting mate would be bloody awesome.

welcome aboard..... head west 1-2hrs and just get stuck in.....the animals are there,DOC permit,pair of binos and just go look.....

Drive to Hanmer then up and over Jacks pass, turn left and after the homestead basically just about anywhere on the left you can hunt. maps turn on and off the features yo want to see on the maps

topo50 app,switch on DOC controlled hunting areas...will give you neat purple overlay and boundary lines on topo or satalite maps TOO EASY to explore a new block when you actually know where the boundaries are.
