    north island deer hunting

Hey team, I'm waiting on my FAL in the mail and am wanting to know where a good spot would be to shoot my first deer next year, based in northland but wanting to travel past Taupo
I've heard the horror stories of hunting public land during the roar which is putting me off...

also what are some spots with safe parking, cheers!

My advice would be to start on the local goats and get the swing of it

Maybe join local Deer Stalkers to learn ropes or even their Hunts course?

Ask yourself this very important question, if all the deer basically live south of akld why do I not shift south?

Please don't suggest sika hunting in the Russell Forest, a sure path to disillusionment for a new hunter,. Yes, there are fallow on South Head, but there is no public land hunting. There is the Woodhill Ballot, but he might wait years for a spot. Guided hunts on private land in that area would be the only option unless you are lucky enough to have your own private land access.

How's your shooting? It would be a pity to go to all the trouble of finding a deer and missing it, and even more of a pity to wound one.

That goats idea is a great one. They're a good challenge to start with.

Best place to shoot your first deer is anywhere in the vitals.
Best thing for a first time poster to do is go to the intros and say hi there.

okay kaimais hard hunting takes a lot to learn how to hunt it many fruitless trips until you learn it even the good Kaimai Mamaku hunters miss out and a deer every two - three trips - probably the most difficult area south of Auckland - Pueora not a lot better very popular hard area to learn - needs time and visits - Te Urewera bit of travel but the best bush hunting in the North Island - deer close to road and seldom hunted country a day walk -huge potential -and deer numbers
