FFS this really dissapoints me. You can see where the powers that be are coming from when they push for arms reforms when there's people out there that are improper people to be owning firearms, paint it anyway you like but the person that has shot another person was not a fit and proper person, they obviously had zero impulse control which is a dangerous type to be using a firearm, obviously also had no regard for the law as they have broken one if not more of the seven rules. Let them rot and leave us responsible firearms owners alone.
I'm sure more information will come out over time but I'm gonna take a stab in the dark and guess that the hunter that has shot someone was also one of these guys that goes hunting once a year, in the roar, they often are and I think that is one thing that has to change, I'm not sure how but going out one time in the year with your neck swollen up more than a roaring red stag full of adrenaline and a rifle in your hands is not a good combination and that needs to be realised by hunters themselves, a fit and proper person is going to tell themselves I'm not ready for this, I need to get out and see some animals, breathe some fresh air and have my head right before going I to an area during the roar where there is a definately possibility of other hunters also.

There is huge room for tougher regulations to get your FAL. When I sat mine, roughly 5 years ago everyone in the class walked out of the lecture with the certificate saying they had passed although some failed failed the test initially. The instructors kept giving people more goes even with the 3 questions that you had to get right first time and the remaining ones. It's too easy in my opinion

That's the problem summed up well.
Unfortunately most people on this forum fit this definition.
Having spent a lot of time in the area just this week the phone has been going nuts this morning.
Even talked to the pilot and when/if the truth does come out you'll feel sick.
Thoughts go out to his family.

Unfortunately it is often experienced hunters shooting friends in the same hunting party, not the weekend worrier that gets out once a year.

Until more info comes out this could be either. Hell, until all the info is out this could have been a stag got shot, bullet passed through took a deflection and hit his mate standing next to him.

I really can't understand how things like this happen. You can guarantee when tougher firearms laws are introduced the negligent person who pulled the trigger will be one of the first to moan. Identify your target WITHOUT DOUBT!!!

There is nothing "obvious" until you know all the facts. Couple of years ago someone was shot by a very senior NZDA member, MSC instructor etc. Right up until the moment he pulled the trigger, he was probably considered completely "fit and propper"...

I dont just want to know its a deer, I want to know if its male or female and roughly how old before I think about pulling the trigger. Was a suggestion I got given when I first started hunting and its a damn good rule i've followed

Tragic. I could guarantee nothing is as simple as it seems though. The mind can play aweful tricks on anyone. Perhaps making a certain % of blaze clothing compulsory during the roar period on public land as part of your hunting permit would lower the rates of accidents. Who knows.

As a side note, I was digusted to see Josh James recent video giving people a safety talk before the roar where he admits lining up his mate because he heard a noise and also shot a rock he thought was a deer. That guy is fucking dangerous. The way he gets so rattled and jittery when they see an animal is the thing that gets people killed.

Like inthe US where you get a tag for certian species, certain breed, certain age, certian sex..... have to make sure of at least those 4 things before taking the shot
