    Nothing beats it!

A lad with his first deer.

A young lad from up the road has been busting for me to take him out for a hunt. He's very keen and has read all the books and watched the vids A month ago I had taken him out to the range for a few shots and to get him familiar with the rifle and safety.

He had my 7-08 (under very strict supervision) for the hunt. I had a .223 as sort of back up.

Anyway, as it often turns out I spotted a young hind in the scrub and he couldn't get a bead on it so as it disappeared I shot it with the 'lil gun. About 150 yards across a gully. So at least he had some meat to take one.

We crossed the creek and found it and while I was giving a gutting demo I heard something coming up out of the creek towards us. I whispered "grab your gun but don't load it until I say". Blow me down a buck walked into view through the scrub about 15 yards away. "Load your gun and shoot it, click clack, and bang" all seemed to melt into one sentence as the buck hit the deck. I supervised a finishing shot and it was all over. Except the smiles. Smiles all around.

My smile was pretty big when he willingly put a leg and backsteaks into the pack I had lent him and I hoisted the hind over his shoulders. I carried a leg and the rifles.

We saw a couple of more deer later on but we had plenty so left them in peace. Tonight I think Im doing a butchery lesson.

That's brilliant! He's a lucky young chap to get that opportunity. It's also good to see that he realises the hard work starts when the deer hits the deck!
