Am thinking of walking into Oamaru through Poronui on thursday night (in the dark). Not sure but am thinking that might raise alarm bells at the station and I might get a visit. Might give them a call tmrw but anyone heard of any issues or know of any rules?

It's a public access poled route so you can walk it whenever you like.
But make sure you stick to the markers and don't get up to mischief.

I was in at Oamaru a couple years back and 3 mountain bikers came in over Te Ringa. They road out across Poronui.
They knew they shouldn’t but didn’t seem too concerned. It sounded like they left a car at the car park at Helisika.

I guess once they’re on their way it would be hard to do much about it from the Poronui’s staff point of view.

And this is the issue when a legal (paper) road is messed with by organisations that permit powerful entities having a say in rerouting legal roads. Have a look on WAMS, and you can see that the paper road alignment still remains, but is not followed by the now legal walk way. No one can hinder anyone negotiating a legal road.

Poronui don't hinder those that are following the rules.
But there are plenty of people who think the rules don't apply to them.
Regarding the legal road criteria, people need to be careful what they wish for. Walking a "public road" with a firearm may be seen as undesirable by some other road users.
Funny story what happened on Friday.
A guy flew in to the Oamaru. Did all the right stuff and put a padlock through the mag well and action of his rifle. But left his key at Helisika. Had to walk straight back out through Poronui. Only to find Helisika all shut up. One of the Poronui staff found him a grinder to unlock his gun.

Work dragged on Thursday so walked in early on Friday morning. Hilary school group were at the hut and some of the girls had slept outside under the stars which was pretty keen. Wasn’t much wind but was going up the valley and followed me around all day. Got squeaked at a couple times on the southern side of the river due to said wind, then gave up and went back to the hut which I had to myself. Didn’t want to get up when the alarm went off as my sleeping bag was quite cozy. Got up and hunted northern side of the river up the hill and down the other side so I had options if the wind wasn’t cooperating. Heaps of sign everywhere. Managed to get the wind right and was heading down the other side taking my time in some open beech, slightly perplexed how with so much sign and how quiet the bush was that I hadn’t spooked anything or bumped into anything, when I came around a big beech and 40 meters away I saw the head and neck of a hind. Would’ve been a tough shot but then it stood up and dropped it on the spot. Nice young hind in really good condition. Bloody good weather all weekend. Cold but not as bad as I thought it’d be for this time of year.

Would have been a difficult shot from the sleeping bag!

What’s the go if you see a dog out in the bush? Don’t want to bowl over someone’s lost dog but also don’t want feral dogs wandering around. If it’s got a collar probs leave it and post the sighting online. No collar and looking rough around the edges though?

Take a photo. I had a dog lost for 9 days, was pretty rough around the edges, lean and hungry as by the time she was found but I was real glad to get her back.

A couple of weeks ago I'd just started the walk in from the car park and a ute stopped and asked if we'd like a ride. Yes please! The guy was from Heli Sika, he dropped me right by the start of the farm land poled route. Brilliant. He mentioned that there were two dogs that had made there way south throguh Taupo down to Oamaru. Black and white dog etc. To shoot them.

I was thinking about it walking through the flats one morning thinking, "what if I see a dog? Do I shoot it?" I'd be mortified if I shot someone's dog lost over the weekend prior. That being said, if I lost a dog, I'd be posting stuff here and also print out a notice on the poled route. Another reason my pup has an e-collar, not that he needs it, but added security while hunting.

I have to say that I would not be shooting a dog on site. I would be inclined to try to catch it first. The dog may not be in the same area as the notices, my one was 12 km away from where she went missing in the first place. If it needs to be euthanised then it should be done humanely. We are fortunate in this area as there is a local couple out near Tokoroa who hold lost dogs (mostly pig dogs) and most people go there to see if their dog has been handed in. Over the years I've dropped of a few and they have been reunited with their owners.

I was thinking the same I’ve done a bit of culling work for Doc/Arc on one of their farms with Fallow.
Saw a cat one evening, only 500m from the cockies house. Had the crosshairs on its chest, and 125gr .308 pill 1/2 a pound from being sent on its way.
Couldn’t pull the trigger though, kept what if it’s someone’s pet.

Was later told off, and had it made abundantly clear all cats on the farm need a bullet. No pets allowed by the staff.
