We’ve been up there several times as missus into botanising. Great track up Symes Rd to obelisk, tho I had to bulldoze thru snow once. We’ve struck freezing weather in January. Track towards Waikaia Bush road needs two vehicles imo as pretty rutted in places. We once met a group of hunters using quads. They had one red and three chamois. Some of the side tracks are covered with plenty of shattered rock - beastly on tyres.

I would possibly go as far as the obelisk then walk at this point I'm thinking. Meant to do it last November but got sick when there then.

The ground up there holds a lot of water and boggy patches on the tracks should not be taken lightly, even in a decent spell of good weather. There are still patches of snow in shaded corners. January/February is better for driving. Small mobs of Reds can be encountered but probably better hunting on the lower slopes near the farmland. It is big country and some fitness is required to cover the distances on foot.
