I tend to chuck in a water purification tab in to the water I collect. I'm 99% sure the water will be fine, but the tabs weigh next to nothing, and saves me having to boil the stuff before drinking it. I normally have a 3 litre bladder in the pack when I start my hunts, so I'm not in any hurry to find drinking water. Any water I collect on the way gets put into a new container and one tab per litre is added. All good to drink after 30 mins.

I’ve always wondered if the tabs ad any taste to the water?

I have a life straw that i carry but have only used it once on the middle of summer.
Only time i got sick was from a hut that's not so used man that wasnt fun. glad to have a longdrop i tell ya

No worse than any of the larger city water supplies (possibly better in some cases). Not hectic in my opinion. To be honest, in my last excursion the water from home (municipal supply) tasted probably more 'chemical' than the stuff I collected and added a tab to.

I've got a Katadyn I think it is soft flask with a filter in the screw in top. Weighs stuff all and folds up to v little. Know a few guys who have had giardia out of the Tararuas and not keen on it myself.

Thats not always good. Say you have a warm week and don't use your cold gear? next trip...?
