    Pikiawatea hut

    Hey There,

Looking at flying into Pikiawatea hut with Helisika next month, never been to that block myself and have done some research etc, but after anyone's general thoughts on the block who have been there recently.
Not after deer will be at this spot at this time of day, just more a its a decent block we would go back, or stay away and look into other options etc.

    Cheers lads and gals.

Others evaluation of a decent block won’t be the same as yours

If your basing block quality on animal numbers your missing out on the best part of hunting, the hunt itself

The dead animal at the end is just a formality

The hunt experience and time alone/with friends is the real prize

Enjoy the block for what it is

    Hi, I hunted that block March 2023. 3 nights, 4 guy's, 3 deer.
The bush hobbit in the group saw the most deer, he was heading down the valley past the meat safe and dropping down to the streams.
2 of us got deer on the tops. One a longish shot from not far south of the hut, Another from a high point well down the ridge SW from the hut at <50 mtr.
2 of us spent time during the day heading north from the hut in the bush, sign but did not see anything, was very open under the bush. Think we needed to drop down a bit lower.

One of the guys did an over nighter further down the ridges and saw sika not far from his fly and some reds further south on the next range in the bottom corner of the block.
from the hut heading south west you drop into a series of 3 bushy saddles. I only went as far as crossing 2 of these. Lots of sign on the tops either side of these bushy saddles.

I've hunted it in March. Probably the wrong time to be honest as most deer were in the bush off the open tops. Probably a mean spring spot.

Hut is very warm, and you get cell reception, and can see Taupo lights in the distance.

What period you flying in? I'm heading to an adjacent block to it in May.
