I noticed most (all?) deer dropped when hit, ie none seemed to hobble off.
So either very good shooting with a rifle or it was a shotgun.

Given DOC used shotgun on tahr I would guess a person intending to just destroy deer would use the same?

00buck is the most common choice of shotgun ammo

yes I know that....#7 isnt common loading but it sure as shit is more effective on smaller animals....wallabies we found were better off with #BBs or #2 as it filled out pattern and had enough penertration for those tthin skinned/light boned hoppers who are as a rule no heavier than a fat Labrador . the #7 has less pellets but way more penertration, than BBs.....way more pellets and less penertration than 00 sort of best of both worlds....in my experience.

Were you doubting your own ability, or was that just me? Yeah some of those shots look like 200m one bullet wonder shots. I've never done pest control out of a helicopter, but it looks both difficult and fun. I have enough difficulty shooting hares out of a moving vehicle (on farm). Of course I'm usually also driving at the time which adds to the challenge.

Good one @Hahn. All this talk about shotguns and I'm sitting here thinking, I'm sure I saw a mag with rifle cartridges in it. Bloody good shooting imo.

Don’t think there would be much meat coming out on the hook if a 12ga was in use..

FN or AR for culling and meat retrieval. 12ga for culling and leaving them on the hill.

I’ve been around when a crew has taken out 100 deer in a morning. All head and neck apart from 2 animals using buckshot.
Animals sent off to Germany so had to be in good nick.

Nice work. I thought a shottie might lack the precision for that but I guess at 30yd the buckshot would have minimal spread and would be confined to the head/neck. The chopper boys from the 60’s and 70’s were well served by their FNs etc. but a benelli m2 could well be a better option than a rifle?

I’ve shot plenty for meat recovery with the shotgun, you have a choke in which keeps the pattern tight and as your aiming for the head there isn’t too much meat wasted
