Thread: Private land huntng oportunities

Morning All

This might be a bit of a reach but I figured its worth a shot.

Im looking for some private land to hunt in Canterbury. I have been hunting DOC blocks with good success for the past few years but have had quite a few trips in several areas recently that have been a no go due to other hunting parties in the areas I planned to hunt. I figure its not really worth potentially disturbing people who are already in an area plus the mistaken identity side of things doesnt sit well with me. My hunitng opportunities are few and far between and I will still be hunting the public land as often as I can but somewhere to fall back on occasionally would be ideal. Im not interested in heads, just some meat animals to keep friends and family fed, happy to knock over goats, pigs, hare, possums and am more than happy to pitch in on the property but Im also happy to pay for access if preferred, either a yearly fee for access if arranged prior to arrival or per animal taken.

Flick me a PM if you have or know of somwhere that would be suitable. I can provide a reference from the land owner that I have been doing pest control for if that is any help.

My advise is to keep going to those spots regardless of other hunters. I often turn up at carparks with multiple cars and carry on and really do I see or bump into them.

As long as you positively identify your target and they do no issues

I've found door knocking works really well. Don't turn up in hunting gear and dress tidy. Tell them the same stuff you've mentioned here, if you've got farming experience, offer to help out, jump on a hand piece, help in the yards etc. they can only say no. Having a box of beers in the truck can go a long way as well. Good luck

Thanks for the advice Hamish, I will take that on board.

I understand your point there if the area you are in is large enough to support multiple hunting parties and ideally there is some form of planning if you do bump into eachother, unfortunately my time constraints/domestic responsibilities dont afford me the opportunity to get too far afield into these places very often. I know the areas I hunt quite well and even if you dont see the other hunters they are still in the area. I also know its not a case of first in best dressed or dibbs on a hunting spot but Id rather not risk ruining another persons hunting experience by trying to insert myself into an area I know already has hunters in it. Perhaps its needless courtesy that doesnt really benefit anyone and is only to my detriment but its just the way I generally do things.

Cheers for the suggestion McNotty. Thats certainly on the cards, I will cast the net wide and see what I come up with. Im no farmer haha civil construction/rope access/drilling/tuna long lining backround.

Hey Ryan, you sold me a scope a while back eh?
Im guessing you are from the south of the south? Man, for the opportunity to knock over a couple of critters id go for a drive and lend a hand for sure. If I can convince the boss I could bring a 5.5t excavator with grab attachment and a 4wd dumper along for the ride!

I totally get where you are coming from. In the old days it was an unwritten rule that if you were parked up at a road end or area it was sort of your area to hunt, especially from the safety aspect. These days I have found a lot of this "respect" if you can call it that has gone, we have had people drive past our vehicle and cruise into the area we are going to hunt....real annoying. lol....bugger,was worth a crack....hope you getting the lovely cooler weather and drizzle weve had over the last week....the grass is NEARLY starting to recover and not look like its been drinking roundup.

Nah mate we just had this last week...


So no rain needed for a while now! Was starting to get a bit dry beforehand though, grass has kicked into overdrive now theres some moisture in the ground, might finally be able to squeeze a cut of silage in before I start locking it up for the end of season

yip thats probably enough moisture for a week or 6......are neighbours still irrigating???? Ive seen stranger things LOL.
hope your fences stayed in place,its a bit of a lottery spreading around rangitata country at the moment,stray wires across paddocks and deep piles of silt,not to mention huge boulder fields and the odd drop off in weird places,keeps me on my toes I suppose.

We could still do with some in Hanmer, still dry and blowing again today
