    Pureora Block - Owawenga Rd

    Hey guys
Looking to go for an explore into the pureoras via Owawenga road - and interested whether anyone has been in via that access road recently. Having never actually driven it, interested in both condition of road, and whether there are spots to park on the side to go off on foot etc. Not looking for anyone's favorite spot etc, just general advice! Thinking we will probably head south/ south east from the road end ideally. Thanks!

    Hi Joel,

Went there about a month ago road condition wasnt too bad but just like most of pureora its getting busier ive noticed with dirt bike riders and four wheel drive clubs. There is small places to pull over and park from memory.

Thanks for the info mate! From looking at Topo50 looks like doc land starts towards the end of Owawenga road access? Can you access much further along from where the road turns into two tracks, or is there a gate or something?

I was up there last weekend. the spot you have identified on the map is the boundary gate. It is always closed but not locked. It has a small place to park but due to a giant mud hole you are best advised to only park there with a 4wd.
You can drive further in without any problems even in a 2wd.
There are parking spots and turnaround areas every so often.
My advice would be either park where you have indicated or continue on until you arrive at the next junction, there is a lot more room there.
The track does progressively get worse the further you go.
There is a lot more activity there lately as previously mentioned.
Also be mindful that there is a more traffic up the entire length of Owawenga road than people realise so take it easy, you don't need someone else's ute as a hood ornament.

Exactly the info I was after. Thanks very much! Will be going mid week so hopefully a few less people (perks of shift work).

Most 2wds will handle the main road, dont try get to the hut or take any side roads though. Getting pretty busy and as mentioned dont hoon your way in, nearly got taken out last Saturday by someone racing to get home.

There is often escapees on the way in also as the place is surrounded by deer farms. Dont even think about getting a rifle out until you hit the point you have marked on the map.
