    Pureora - Hauhungaroa

    Hi team,

Planning a deer hunting trip with two other lads for week after next, heading into the Pureoras for a couple of nights during the week.

None of us have hunted that area before - current plan is to head in to the Hauhungaroa Hut and hunt the area around there.

Basically just checking in on whether this is a sensible location for deer or whether there are obvious areas we should be reconsidering. Between us we’ve shot goats and a few tahr, but this would be the first deer on the ground for any of us.

    Cheers

Never hunted that area specifically but I do plenty in Pureora. I would expect the hunting in there to be as good or better than anywhere else considering it's a fair hike in.
    Definitely worth a look.

There was a guy Tim Stewart who used to write for NZO, his segment was specifically around hunting in the Hauhangaroa Range, worth tracking those articles down if possible.

Was in the general area during the roar, plenty of hinds around. Find the sheltered wee guts and you should get onto them, fair amount of pigs around too.

One of the true gold bush hunting areas of nz. Get up onto the big swamp and hunt below towards the heads. Might even be worth while flying in, strop all the deer out, that'll give you plenty of venison for rest of year. Truelly a bush hunting paradise, along with some heads of the ureweras in the whakatane catchment.

Man, that’s some really handy feedback - really appreciate it. Good to know we haven’t planned a trip to a dud area!
