I flicked doc te kuiti and email asking if the drops started two days ago when seeing this. Still no response![]()
all the guff I read about it 1080 does not bind in fat or muscle animals like deer or cattle that consume a sub lethal dose pass it out - but a small quantity can be still in a possums gut for some time so poisoning of dogs very real - lethal dose for a dog is miniscule -
i remember back in the nineties ...... camped at piropiro on a queens birthday weekend , about 6am on the saturday the trucks rolled in and setup by where you got the drinking water (before it was on tap so at the south end of the campsite .... then came the choppers ..... there was green dust as thick as fog no safety gear worn . while one chopper was applying the baits MAF had a chopper harvesting for TB testing they pulled out some massive pigs and stags. when we stopped in at DOC te kuiti on the way in (told them where we were headed)they said nothing about the planned drop for the weekend .
i imagine now base of operations would be on private land to avoid public interaction and obviously DOC still dont like to give too much away with timing and date details

Just had this response from DOC,
"Thanks for your email regarding a dog permit for Piropiro campground, we are in the process of doing the pre feed for this area happening today and possibly Sunday weather permitting and then shortly after that the 1080 toxin will be flown, I could give the permit from the 3rd for a week at the most but you will have to keep an eye on the DOC web site for any updates on any alerts."
Kakaho Rd had pellets on it on Saturday as did the track to Waihaha hut , actually a sandstone bench right beside the Waihaha river was covered in them , scary to think how much toxin will end up in those rivers and streams that flow to the lake .
Personally, I would not be taking any meat from treatment area for a couple of months.
Even live animals will likely have had a sub lethal dose and have poison residue in meat. It will work its way out in time.
Just something I would stay away from.
Fresh on Saturday up Kakaho , the ones up Waihaha looked older on Sunday but they had 2 hot days and a bit of rain so hard to tell how old I guess.
And liver, brain and bone marrow. The chemical change in the body to citrate residue is the end lethality..
