Nobody wants to see the majority of NZ hunting locked up in any way at all. Hunting on the majority of public land will remain free, except for the special herds that hunters identify they want some extra management on like the Wapiti herd. Here the majority of hunters want and are prepared to pay for the extra management required to try and improve the herd. The big gains on the rest of the public land will be more say on things like 1080 drops and Waro/helihunting etc that can seriously affect our hunting opportunity. The main thing is that we will be making our own decisions for a change, and not having DoC or the government of the day's whims forced on us. It won't happen overnight, but once we've got the legislation in place, then we can really start to make some changes.

As it is proposed, won't "we" be a minority voice on the Council amongst a majority of commercial members? Or am I wrong?

As it was proposed, no, rec' hunters would have had plenty of say. As the DoC lawyers drafted the bill ignoring the establishment committee's recommendations, yes, we would be in the minority. That is why it is essential your submission demands it go back to what the establishment committee and the "collective hunting sectors" have recommended, that there be at least 50% recreational hunter representation on the council.

Firstly nice to see your name on an internet forum that I regularly use Greg! secondly I'll do my submission tomorrow when I'm not half asleep but would I be able to print this off and get copies out to a few gunshops in auckland? I'm thinking well if you need a few more submissions then having this printed on sheets of paper at the counters of gunshops and getting their staff to respectively get word out would be a start.

There is alot of guys have put in a hugh amount of time to get this right , all hunters but for hunting .

Yep, go for your life. We have put most of this in the magazine, but what I've posted here is the most up to date advice as we work through what in the legislation needs to changed most.

mint Also greg will there be anything in the magazine about AAB 285? this is the one that scares the bejeepers out of me, correct me if I'm wrong here but I'm sick of the police continually trying to punish legitimate firearms owners ,AAB 285 is another fine example of such attitudes and the police have even admitted that its not going to bring crime rates down or help the community etc....... What on earth are we going to do?????????

Its all just another step towards the inevitable...we will have deer, chamois, tahr seasons here one day... which we will pay for in more ways than one, or two, no make that a three...

They can season all they like I will still hunt when and how I like...... Its my NZ born god givin right....

To need seasons on the bulk of our public land our population would have to increase 100 fold, something I don't think we're going to have to worry about in the near future! The only place where there will be any restrictions are those areas and herds of special interest identified by a majority of hunters. Like the Wapiti area. And those restrictions will be decided by us, the majority of hunters who hunt those areas. Remember, the GAC is us deciding what we want. The days of they deciding what is going to happen to us and our animals are what we are trying to leave behind!
