No roaring heard today but lots of rut activity and deer tracking about, 2 deer seen and three others spooked but no shots fired. The big drop tyne 14 pointer we were after last year is gone , we think he was taken out in October when starting to grow his velvet which was a shame. A couple of years back we caught a 9 pointer with the same drop tyne on his right antler and today after no sign of him we got a series of pictures on the trail cam of him now sporting a 10 point head. Still needs a bit of growing but at least the big fella has some progeny running around.
I found this rut pad shortly after spooking an animal no far from it ,most likely the stag
This afternoon we put up two cameras on different stag's rut pads, one the drop tyne fella we think the other is an unknown at this point so it will be interesting to see what he looks like, roll on Friday. They should be going well by then.
Anyone know if stags roaring te urewera yet?
Here is a picture of the "Baby Throwback " stag has the drop tyne like his dad and same side, just needs a few more years.
Picture of dad in 2020
Hopefully we will get some more good shots on the trail cameras we set up yesterday.
Was in pureora south and barely heard two moans over the weekend, while a mate of mine in a section in the north shot a massive 12.
Hunting was very hard with crispy leaves all around.
Same here. Super crunchy Rewarewa in the native. I was in the pines which was bit quieter when I wasn't thrashing through blackberry
I was surprised how dry it was in Pureora today, but still a lot quieter than where I usually go (bloody rewarewa!).
Nothing heard but not there at the right time of day. Lots of hunters about, will be busy next weekend!
Have just been in the Ruahines, and stags were roaring well. Roared all night last night, and on and off all day.
Roared in a scrubber, and high tailed it to get the meat chilling
Just had a few days in north Canterbury, stags are going off..... only had my phone and a bluetooth speaker (no rifle) managed to get 4 going at the same time, replies for half an hour or so but no one came to say hello. Private land but sure a couple were on the neighbouring doc block
Tip for anyone, find the you tube clip stag roaring under 2m... that gets them fired up or there are a few free apps. Bluetooth speaker is amazingly loud when its calm and quiet in the hills
Interesting. In central Canterbury two nights ago I had three
different stags come in for a look at me. One scruffy young pup with a couple of hinds, a big bodied ten holding three hinds, and an unseen stag that quietly walked up a few metres behind my mate and scared the bejeezus out of him with a couple of grunts as he winded him and took off. Roaring was pretty quiet though.
Anyone heard anything in te urewera?
Just came out from 3 days in there.
Where I was it looked like the roar was still a wee way off yet. Wallows hadn't had any use and no sign of any fresh tree scraps etc. No roars heard. Saw a few hinds which didn't appear to have a stag in tow. Shot a scrubby stag, he was gorging himself on supplejack and wasn't rutted up at all.
Good to know. We'll be in over Easter so hope they start up. Looks like 2nd weekend be better
Still early days in southland so far, only just had our first frost today otherwise it's been real warm. Stags should start to hold up over the easter break.
To be fair I was making a bit of noise and the missus was a bit scared of something getting to close, just good to wind them up from a distance
