Just back from a couple of days in a local spot in the Ruahines, Easter Friday heard a few roars got close to a couple but they seemed to be on the move, and would only roar in reply to my roars, had a nice 8 ptr come in to my roar but couldn't get a clear shot through the shit before he spooked, good to see though.
Saturday morning got lucky with a good ole Ruahine 6ptr and thought i better shoot him to make up for last year.
For the rest of sat and sun did not hear a single roar anywhere, watched a couple of hinds and yearlings on a slip for about twenty min , no sign of a stag with them.
Both the 6 ptr and the 8 ptr seemed to be on there own ,no hinds in tow.
Couple of days at home then flying in for 6 nights so yippee !!!

was watching my pet hinds this weekend...never heard a roar at all...did spot younger stag chasing two hinds for couple of seconds never to reappear.... got good look at 2 hinds last night,no stag to be seen anywhere near them, and they completely ignored my roar.....its like they have seen the stags, been poked and back to business as usual again.did spot person Saturday morning sneaking around with rifle...not sure if he supposed to be there of not,was just too slow to get photos of him...the parrie ducks harrassed the crap out of him for half n hour and thats what woke me up...by watching hen circle it wasnt hard to suss out where this joker was located. think he may have spotted me standing in doorway in the buff with binos in hand...possibly why they took off towards road/vechile so quickly...probably still trying to erase image from his head.

Went to Pureora early today. No roars heard, didn’t try roaring myself as too many other hunters around (6 other vehicles at car park).
Some fresh sign around, both the dog and I heard something fairly close but didn’t get eyes on it. Heard a keruru take off overhead, then a strange whistling noise, then a branch thumped onto the ground between me and the dog! It wasn’t big enough to do major damage but I would have needed new underwear if it hit me.
The big wallow I usually check was just a lake with about 10cm of water sitting on top of the mud.

I’m wondering if the roar hasn’t started yet, or if it’s been and gone already.

Don't think its started in pureora or urewera where I go. I've only provoked 1 young stag in a pureora pine block

Yeah plenty of roaring but they all seem to be sitting up in their beds not willing to come down

That first stag looks young and full of potential.

Well going back 3 or so decades (80's)
    It would start 28th
6th to the 12th was full peak
Then quiet for a week and a vicious 1-3 day spurt (no pun intended) some time between the 18th and 23rd
Sounds like parts of the Pureora has been a fizzer
Not Southern or Eastern by the looks

Not sure just how much room there is in the Southern Pureoras for deer. Every wee clearing, flat spot or pull over had a tent or a vehicle sitting on it yesterday
