    Sadie Hunt cont.

    Sadie Hunt cont.

So I now needed to blood my new to me rifle. So on Monday I headed up to a local DOC block that I frequent. Was happy to get a goat either for self, Sadie, commercial pet food or a deer.

Off I went. Needless to say I had a good walk n poke around. A bit of deer sign, no wallows where I thought there might have been. Having learned from previous experience using a rifle with iron sights, binoculars is quite a useful tool to have. I had one n was using it. The bush is open in places and you can see 60-80 metres at times and is good for being able to positively ID’ng your target/s. So much so at one stop I scanned the area, couldn’t see see anything then started to move off two goats popped out n took off....felt like a bit of a prat... One would of being 10-12 metres away the other 20m maybe. To top it off as I came up to a junction and was considering which way to go, something crashed off...no idea what it was.

I came back after walking over 16000 steps ...and humbled....

    Attempt 2...

Had a bit of rain during the week. Underfoot wasn’t going to be quite so crunchy and I really needed to get some dog tucker. I headed out again but as going to focus on one area to bring home a result.

A lot of walking quietly (as possible) and scanning using the binoculars happen. The binos were nothing flash, a set of Soviet era Russian made one that I dad purchased sometime in the 60s-early 70s. More than suitable for the glassing at hand.

Stopped to glass a area. Nup, nothing. Move forward, shit white goat, movement, at once! Nanny, I’ll try for a neck shot.
Fired. Saw it drop. Got up again...bugger.
3-4 animals take off, heading for further cover. Walk up to try n keep the nanny in sight. No joy. Start looking for blood trail, evidence of a hit. Found blood. And some more ...and more. Ok I have a trail to follow. As I’m tracking I spot something off to my right. Billy. Rifle up, onto shoulder. Bang. Looking like a solid hit.
Conundrum... do I follow the trail or check out the second one...? I follow the first trail. All looking good, come to a puddle...then nothing. I cast around ...nup, nup. Start again. Cast around. No , no , no. Shitballs. Not ideal. Make the call to look for the billy.

Go back to find approximate spot where I shot from. Go searching. Catch a whiff of billy. Looking, looking, sniffing, looking, snif... ah there it is.

Shot a bit further back than I thought. Started behind the ribs n quartered through to the opposite shoulder. Punctured the gut. I skin so I can take all available meat. Hate wasting it these days, even if it’s stinky billy. Won’t be taking the bones or offal(heart, kidneys etc) though.

Meat now cut up and freezing it down so can bag it up and store it free flow.

    Hot barrels every one.

All good. Yes was looking on the Belmont website earlier to see what the offerings were....the 130/135 looks tempting. Takes me back when was using the .308 as my ‘one gun to rule them all..’. The 130gns just rocked. It’ll be either that or the 150s they have....

Had a PM come through from the original owner of the Brno. Adds to a already interesting journey with the rifle....

    Nice story,thanks for sharing.

To avoid heartbreak, glue your foresight in place.Tou probably know that depressing the wee button at the muzzle end of the foresight ramp enables you to slide out the sight blade and reverse it for use with the pop up aperture.

But,they fall out in the bush and that's going to ruin your hunting,so epoxy it in place is my suggestion.
