Hey guys ..I still consider myself a newbie in the hunting realm ..my discipline is bowhunting and I have only smashed over goats so far as you guys would understand we have to be 60m or closer ..in saying that I use these products to help give me an advantage and they have convinced me that there is merit to them ..I hunt the traditional way of having the wind in my face but also understand that wind can change in an instance ..the reason I am a believer that these products do manage the odour better is a brother and I went for a hunt down wanganui where they have pigs, goats and fallow deer ..I was given inside info on a spot to check out which was a 2 hour hike to get there so I had a reasonable sweat up ..spotted 2 fallow hinds 200m away had perfect cover to stalk up to 60m away and even with the wind coming from behjnd me They were not alerted to my presence..i tried to make my way around a knob to at least get me another 10 metres closer and was busted by a 3rd hind that saw my movement coming around the knob (unreal alertness) ..because of my inexperience I should have remain still until the deer was comfortable it was reacting to nothing ..but my stupid ass bobbed back Down and waited for a few minutes before i slowly popped my head back up with a little sparse bush in front of me ..and it was still looking in my direction gave a bark took off alerted 11 other hinds that I didn't see that were obscured by a small hill that were all feeding with out being alerted to me being there, they were 50m away ..there is also a couple other occasions the wind has not been in my favour and had similar results (Kaimai ranges -I'm from Matamata) ...I was gutted when I seen 14 hinds Break back to the bush in Wanganui

One other occasion I was walking up the back of a farm (Kaimai ranges - West side) in a gully had finger of bush with a small stream running through it that hadn't been clear felled for farming so was part of the native ..had my bow strapped to the back of my day pack walking up the race getting to the spot I wanted to check out ..walking up the race with the stream on my left getting to the top of the rise with a 3 metre bank to my right ..the race flattened out somewhat and diverted also to the right ..I clear the bank and boom a red deer hind 80m away feeding on the grass ..I pull back to be out of the deers vision headed to the gully side where a biggish patch of grass was and take off my pack unstrap my bow nocked an arrow snuck around a little to have a look to see if the red deer hind was still there but nothing "shit" so I ranged the bush it was next to 80m it read so even though the wind wasn't in my favour I made my way back on the race stalking ever so slowly and kept ranging that particular bush until I got within 49m then it's head appeared through some really long grass head down feeding 5m to my left of the bush I was ranging drew my bow and waited for it to turn broadside to give me my shot ..no sooner as it turned broadside it spotted me and boom into the native, down the gully and gone ..just 2 more seconds is all I needed to have my shot but not to be and this was all with the wind behind my back

Often the wind can be behind you but be being blown above the animals by a ridge or eddying around and not getting there at all.
Nothing is ever as it seems with wind in the hills.

Awesome cheers for the reply but I know how far I have stalked in because I have to ..could be right could be wrong but when you are at the same level as the animal and only 50m high chance that is going to make it to the deers nose ..I'm loving this

When I get home I will post up pics of what I use ..cool thing for me is that we have come along way in technology in everything we do ..I bet these guys are driving around in modern cars with modern gadgets (rifles boots binos etc) if they are so old school then why have latest technology if you believe old way is best ...we are in an age of convenience and more efficient ways of doing things ..don't get me wrong I play the wind in my favour as much as I can because I hunt with a bow ..no dog to track for me (I could but it takes away from my learning skills of tracking) ..it's what's makes us all unique..hunters come in many shapes and sizes so one size doesn't fit all ..

I realise that ..the MASSIVE difference a rifle has the ability to drop an animal at a 100m and beyond because of a scope ..because a bow is not scoped out like a rifle and we have a peep and pins (compound bow) we HAVE to be with in 60m unless you a crack shot like "Tim Wells" who's nailing targets out to 110m no peep no pins and this guy is nailing prairie dogs that is unreal shooting ..shooting a bow compared to a rifle goes like this 10m with a bow is the equivalent to a scoped rifle at a 100m ..if you even want to come a shoot a bow and see what it's like I have an archery workshop set up in my garage with the rugby fields across the road so I can practice long range ...keep it coming boys this is beautiful
