Semi accessible hut with chance at chamois or tahr

    Hi all,

A bit of a shot in the dark but does anyone know of a hut that is semi accessible with tahr, chamois, or deer around? Not looking for a trophy, just hoping to find an animal or two. We are two Canadian couples, one with a 1 year old boy so we are hoping to find a hut within around 10km of walking distance with half decent terrain or track. We are looking from Milford Sound to Arthur's Pass, and either east or west side of the divide. Two of us will stay back to do some shorter walks with the boy while two of us will head out to hunt for the day. Looking to spend 3 - 4 nights in.

I’ve looked at some of the huts up the Jollie, Eyre region, or Mount Aurum as possibilities but I’m not familiar with how many animals are in the areas. Any and all help is greatly appreciated!

Not sure what the Chamois numbers are like these days, but a few years ago I saw a couple on the slopes above Avoca Homestead. You have to cross the river near the homestead, but pretty easy access, we had small kids with us. Can be quite busy in there though... I think its fairly popular with pig hunters, but not sure how much the ranges higher up get hunted.

p.s. Avoca Homestead is now basically a DoC hut, as the base of the Torlesse Range
