Big 270 fan here. But whenever I see people cutting them down I really ask why? go with a short action 7m08 or something and make the most of a short lite rifle. 270 really comes into its own with a longer barrel where it puts pressure on the magnums.

you will need a gas mask for a 17-inch barrelled 270

Some rough MAXIMUM numbers from GRT both in a 17" barrel, and using 2209 for a full burn:
    270win 145gr eldx ~4gr more powder ~2740fps.
    6.5 PRC 143gr eldx ~2700fps

The equivalent 308 load would use 2208:
    308win 200gr eldx ~2300fps

Using faster powders just to get a 100% burn means sacrificing speed. Switch the PRC to 63gr of 2225 and GRT says you get 2775fps (and still a 99% burn, because reaching full chamber pressure burns more powder than an extra few inches of barrel).

Also stick to a 165gr in the 308 and it'll tell you that you can reach 2600 with 43.5gr of 2206. Or 2700 with a 150gr and 44.5gr.

As far a shorter barrels go, when the Duleys did all of those bush pigs it was the .270 that come out on top wasn't it?
Something like a 145gr eldx getting over 2900 out of a shorter barrel with superformance powder. The general consensus was a magnum suppressor with 18" and no shorter than that.

I have a .308 and if I punch those numbers into the ballistics app makes the short barrel .308 looks like it has the trajectory of a brick.
The recoil will still be a lot less than any magnum and very manageable.

Put it this way, if guys off this forum can shoot deer with a .270 and lrab out to 800 odd yards going 2800ish with adi powder in a longer barrel. Then out of an 18" or 19" barrel with more modern powder going the same velocity you have a pretty versatile setup.
Worried about recoil, just download some 120gr or 130gr ssts or nosler ballistic tips for closer stuff.

    I ignored 2225 because it's a compressed load. And went with 200gr for the 308 because it's a scaled up 270 145gr:
    145x(308/277)^3 = 199gr

2225 in a long throated 270 would be a hoot though.

You could always just thread your 270 at it's current length and try it for a couple of hunts. If you don't like it you still have options.

I bush hunt with a suppressed 20 and a suppressed 22 inch rifle no problems.

stop being so logical....... terrible suggestion,it will not give much extra money to the retailers or gunsmiths.... and the OP wont have to go and buy new dies and supplies for the new rifle..he will even be able to use up old loads so no benifit to retailers there either..terrible suggestion.

Yea they found the 270 performed the best when they could only use factory ammunition in that configuration for sponsorship reasons. When reloading was an option so they could influence the performance then they would use something else.

That's faster than an 18inch Creedmoor or .260 with Factory ammo which is what he's using.

But only if you are using factory ammo in the .260 or Creedmoor.
Being a reloader I can get more out of a Creedmoor or .260 with the same length barrel and using less powder than using factory loads in a 6.5prc which has more recoil and more powder.
