If I had the luxury of carrying out whole animals without cutting them up I would. For rabbits, gotta gut them asap or the meat ends up smelling like chemical weapons of mass destruction. Good podcast though.

Have found goat's dumped in to many creeks/rivers including right in the hut creeks to not use a filter of some sort.

There's definitely some idiots who don't think things through or just don't care .

A butcherd stag carcass like that shouldn't be to hard too move out of the waterway? Pretty bad look for non hunters to come across. Wouldn't even cross my mind to leave one in a creek.

FFS bunch of old women . Who even said it was left in the creek or whether or not its even DOC land. We can all be very quick to assume and jump to conclusions around here.

I wonder if one should therefor carry a game bag and hang it whole in a tree overnight. Walk back to camp and return the next day to cut it up and haul out. That’s if possible of course.

Deer put hot into a chiller is not the the optimum but one put into a safe to cool slow but steady then into a chiller say 6-12 hours later is I've found. Depends on outside air temp of course.

I didnt cross the stream I dont like wet boots . I didnt dispose of it under a log either. I did pull the front and guts out on myside and throw it into some scrub. Normally I wouldnt feel the need to justify my actions to strangers from the internet but im feeling a bit attacked here.

As someone who has had giardia from contaminated creek water and throwing up or shitting through the eye of a needle for a week , then 2 weeks just generally feeling downtrodden followed by another week of puking/shitting , and this went on for nearly a year and a 20kg weight loss before the doc figured out what it was , I dare say if you had had that bug also , you wouldn't mind getting your boots wet .
And the cure was worse than the bug . Drop a pill that strips your stomach lining off - which then gave me ulcers ...... another 6 months of feeling like crap - no fun at all .

I learn't the hard way why you shouldn't leave carcasses in a creek and knowing what the possible outcome could be .( it wasn't me that left it by the way. I always remove any carcasses I find in waterways now even if they not mine or died of old age - wouldn't wish that bug on my worst enemy )

Don't think of this as an attack on you - just an observation and my own experience on why it is not the thing to do .... even at the cost of wet boots....

Any gut bag or lost deer left on the hillside will eventually make it's way to a stream...and don't tell me you haven't done it.

A guy I flatted with at uni reckoned he was the first person in NZ to get giardia, he said it was black water out both ends so he never knew which way to face in the bathroom...
