Can anyone shoot deer there or is it private land? do you need permets , licence etc...?
I reckon they're an awesome looking deer, hoggies are the one every aussie wants. couldnt tell you how they taste havent been that lucky yet. Its pretty strict on hog deer you have tags, and can only hunt them in April and the bag limit is one stag and one hind a year. Once you shoot one you are only allowed to gut it and then it must be taken to a checking station within 24 hours of harvesting it. They're endangered where they originate so Australia is very protective over them.

I'm not sure of all the stuff you need to do to hunt here. You definately need a licence and some permits but not sure on the specifics. Every state is different and they just recently changed the laws here. Dont quote me but I think NSW is the easiest to get one. Hunting for most species is on private (the only public land you can hunt is state forest). BUT sambar hunting is allowed in some national parks in Gippsland although you really need to check because its hefty trouble you'll find yourself in if you are where you're not meant to be.
    Hope that helps.

Head shot unfortunately, skull was completely shattered so only had the 2 antlers left, but they are still on my wall in a home-made mount.

Unfortunately I don't have a photo either... Well not on my computer. I was out rabbit shooting on the farm just on dusk with the .22 age about 15 I think. Had turned to head for home and I cut through a gully instead of walking up the main ridge. Two hinds jumped out and I shot the first one between the eyes without even thinking about it. I only had a pocket knife so I cut the throat and carried on and 100m down the gully I shot the second one. I couldn't believe my luck and left the rifle with this one and ran the 2km home and in the front door. After getting yelled at by mum because I still had my muddy, bloody, boots on I managed to tell dad what had happened. Took two of us an hour or two to drag them out but that just made it all the more rewarding.

Hehe nice. My first was similar, was with a 22mag tho, and was a young stag. Got a photo somewhere.

Good stuff fellows. My first was over 20 years ago, a sambar stag with it's 2nd head. Hunted for 18 months before I finally shot it and the shot 2 spikers the following week.
By the way hog tastes fantastic. A 5 year old stag I shot (only one ever) was as tender and tasty as a fallow yearling. My daughter shot a hog deer yearling doe and it just melted in your mouth. Best veni I've ever eaten

First deer that I have shot. I have killed a couple with my company car on business trips over the past several years.

Southland, December 2011, Sako A7, .308 with new Gunworks suppressor. I took the hind legs and back steaks as that is about all I could carry by myself. Found the bullet just under the skin, 150 grain Federal Power Shok at about 220m.

    First deer

Here is mine, shot in July 1987 aged 16, Waihaha in Pureora. First hunt with the Waikato NZDA. Phil Meulemkamp (sp?) took me out. His dog Jacques got us on to several deer that day. Phil shot the first one, I was lucky enough to get a yearling hind later in the day. Shot with an open sighted Jungle carbine, using 20yr old CAC ammo. Missed with the first shot, but it jumped forward and stopped and I got it second shot.
