    South island trip Libretto range

    Hi All
We are heading south this year from Coromandel to hunt the Libretto range off Lewis pass road. March 21 to start of April
Hope to park at the lodge and then walk the length to Foleys track and drop down at the deer camp site. Then get back down the road to the car.
Problem I have is that the wont shuttle us in a Rental car. Thinking of stashing a bike foleys end so one of us can ride back to lodge to get the car. 13km walk down the road with no transport

Any ideas or spots up top that is better hunting would be a great help to these 2 north boys. PS hunting with Bows as well so nothing long range for us

Thanks for the help in advance
    Dean

Could always hitch hike.. a few hunters do that and you will likely get picked up by a fellow hunter

The roar down here means vehicle break ins in both passes. Just a heads up usually they hit both passes in a night. I've been broken in multiple times that time of year.

It will be fine there and one of you should be able to hitchhike back fine.

Yeh sweet. That should be sweet. I always feel terrible for the random campers that have there life in their vehicles when they hit all the hunters vehicles.

Speaking to the cop who looks after that area, they have cameras both ends of the area and that has drastically reduced the amount of breakins. In saying that, you might consider parking at Boyle village? I think it's a little built up and not much further to hitch hike if you're concerned about break ins

I would take that with a grain of salt. I got broken with atleast 50 other vehicles after I was told they had "caught the ring" that had been doing it. I provided video of the thieves using my card with Paywave at a Gas station in Nelson refilling Jerry cans repeatedly to the value of $3k as well as photos of the plates and video of their faces going into multiple stores. Cameras don't deter them so I would assume they do nothing and park somewhere safe or don't leave anything even marginally valuable in the vehicle and have up to date insurance.

I had my vehicle broken into near Cass last year taking my son tramping. I love the Arthur's Pass area, but it's really put me off, to be honest. We had left nothing of value in the car, glovebox left open, just by looking through windows you could see it was empty. Just some old dry clothes, worthless. Didn't stop them breaking in and stripping the car, emptying the glove box of its detritus, ripping out the back seat to see what was hidden underneath it (nothing). The nuisance value of dealing with it all and getting the door lock fixed sucks. Old car so damage and losses worth less than the insurance excess so not much help there... some pricks need their fingers broken.

Yes, a piss poor way of dealing with these car break ins. With the camera's, they (DOC/Police) have to have a sign placed up advising that security cams are in place due to our piss poor pc privacy laws. Otherwise there would be alot more cameras in place throughout parking areas in the hills. Last guys caught a few years ago having broke into cars at the top of the Lewis Pass were from the Coast. Extremely rare to be caught unfortunately.
