    Wow,
    Thank you all very much for the info. I went for a walk up Loveday the other weekend and managed to see one and heard them all over the place. Has anyone been whistled at this far down the Ruahine's?
    I didn't think the Sika came down this far yet. I had two hinds in one gully whistling at me for about 30mins around Billy Goats Creek before they ninja'd away.

    Don't know what the whistle was.
    I didn't think there are any Blue Ducks down this far?
    A very much dought it would be a Sika.......way to far South.

    Good on you for going and having a look. ....they are there keep looking.

    Definitely not a bark, almost like a very high pitched sneeze.
    Never heard it's like before, but quite cool listening to it and attempting to sneak up on it just to find out. It happened high in a gully just east of the DOC track that leads to nowhere up the stream from Loveday (when heading toward Billy Goats on the other side of the ridge line).
    Spoke to a fellow from Dannevirke who has said the farm deer have been roaring over that way, even though they are still hard in velvet. The source is reliable and not prone to exaggeration. Anyone else heard anything about a possible early roar?

    pepperwood is your friend in the southern ruahines mmwwaahahaha and also the wonderful leatherwood plant cackle cackle cackle, shoot the slips and edges and algud, if choppers are around won't poke their noses out till dusk but there's shltloads of them most i saw 5 STAGS on a slip, all big spooky huas 8 and 10 pointers trotting winded what a bastard, coulda gut-shot one at best, had to watch them get away , about the bush-hunting find patches of open bush surrounded by pepperwood they sit in there but good luck hoho the
    southern ruahines are also wind-blasted to hell. makes it a bit more sporting for the deer mmwwaahaha
