    Southland Goats

Looking to get my first animal bowhunting. As far as I can see on the DOC website the places in Southland that have goats are the Catlins and Cattle Flat/East Dome.

Which would be my best bet, or am I better to just head up to Otago?

    Cheers

I live in the catlins and there are goats but very few and far between. In my area at least. Maybe see 1 or 2 a year on certain farms. They did have numbers years ago and they were rounded up and sold. Plenty of deer tho lmao.

Ah damn. A deer would be even better but probably beyond my ability to get one at this stage.

Its silly season yearlings being booted off mums right now deer out feeding heavily. Its as good a time as any. Just make sure youve put the time in behind the bow.

It's a long time since I've been there but Tablehill reserve in the Catlins used to hold goats and the habitat there would favour bow hunting.

Good to know, might have a crack at them then.
Been shooting compound for a year, would be confident to take shots on an animal up to 40m, could probably do further but dont want to risk it.

Hadn't noticed that block off to the side, do you know if it was included in the recent 1080 drop?

No goats in there now, plenty of reds though. Good wee block for a day hunt. No 1080.

For the most part the catlins are 1080 free and have been for years now. We had the possum vrew come through probably 5 years ago and do a q.c aparantly they failed target so they decided it was a waste of time and no longer posion.
