Y’all ever rattle for whitetails? It’s a blast…when they coming charging in. Also gives you something to do, rattle, sit, move, rattle, sit, repeat.
Does anyone know if there is phone reception at Abrahams Bay to get weather reports? Also has anyone had any luck catching trumpeter nearby? Anyone have much luck deep in that block? Cheers
Spark is fine from the beach in front of the hut. Vodafone not so good although I could send emails but no calls. Weird.
Nah, doesn't work here Joe...well, never has for me anyway, they're a bit different here being hunted 24/7 all year round, very stealthy but cheeky with it, big bucks very cunning, that's how they get to be big bucks.
I was ‘around the corner’ in South West Arm for a few days last week while visiting a mate in Oban and was past your block a few times in the boat.
Having a boat will be handy to get you around the corner (toward freshwater) as there is some very nice-looking country on the Abrahams Block that I doubt sees a lot of foot traffic. If you were to get onto some of those small rocky peninsulas, you could sit and watch several big open/grassy faces bays etc. Who knows, you may see the two deer we saw from the boat here again.
In terms of fishing, a ledger is fine and take a bit of squid to get you started.
Have hunted the blocks either side of abrahams in the past.
Best way to ensure success with the blue cod that far into pattersons is keep it shallow against the rocks. Have caught many in Hapuatuna in 1m of water off the rocks using a builders line and hook with a bit of sausage meat. Blue cod are not as fussy as the average snapper. In fact I had less success when boat fishing in south west arm.
There are deer in those blocks but a lot of hunting pressure so not as many as other areas of the island. Nice flats in Abrahams. I have had good success in the past sitting up a tree with a good view near fresh sign, if you are going to stalk make sure you walk extremely slow. I shot two deer in hapuatuna stalking the flats along a creek to mask my noise.
Have fun!
