Thread: Stock on doc land...

So what's the story when stock get loose of doc land, free game?? Was 2km from road to doc boundary then 2km up the riverbed, only fence was on the roadside. Saw a pair of hunters coming out and they said there were another 3 or 4 right up near the saddle so another 1-2km up the river. Said they were making a mess and manure everywhere. Steep rocky riverbed so would have been tricky for them jumping up some spots. I saw 2 mobs of 3 had the cross-hairs settled on one as all I could see was black, then figured it was a cows nose not a goats!

I am a fan of free range beef, whats the story free game? The ones i saw did have ear tags in...

Nope not free go. Need to get in touch with DoC they give the landowner a time to get them removed. Quite a process to go through. The animals still belong to the farmer.

Might just do hat cos they are making a hua of a mess

my understanding is yes if theyre still with thier mothers but if theyre left behind after the cockies mustered up the tresspassers??

docs about pulling fences out and letting the stuff turn back to overgrown scrubby weed choked shite then moaning like shit cap in had for money to fight the pest weed/animal problem.
the formerly grazed and less overgrown areas of lake ellesmere are a prime example.

i figured that they werent fair game, just slack of the cockie cos they have obviously been in there for months!

If they have no tags or markings then they are not owned by anyone other than the crown, therefore it is my interpretation that they are fair game. If I see them and cannot see any markings and judge they are of an age that they have had sufficient time to be brought in by a farmer but haven't (say 2 yrs or more) Then bang

What you want him to do?
Not graze his paddocks?
Spend everyday mustering the bush?
You'll find it's only a few winter months that they push anywhere.
We have many Kms of un fenced bush edge,
In the good years sometimes a bit more gets done but doc is supposed to pay half.

wouldnt take much fencing to cut this little valley off. has a fence running round the forestry block adjacent to the riverbed i walk up. 200m MAX, dozen warraths and a few strands of live wire would fix it!

Was wondering what the deal there would be. I have to pay half my boundary fence costs.

Sheep and beef belong to someone untill they have given up hope of recovering them.

Deer on the other hand as a pest species do not.

So if I see your dog lost in the Ruahines with no tag and I judge you've had sufficient time to find it your happy for me to fold it?

Should add that most cattle (beef cattle) just have a little NAIT tag now that's been designed to be hard enough to see in hairy ears at the best times so I'm buggered if I no how you can tell in the hills.
