They are currently looking for funding to check out the theory that treating 1080 with deer repellent (Blood and Bone IIRC?) actually ATTRACTS more rats to eat the stuff

If this turns out to be true it could be great news but not proven so far - someone else is probably better informed re progress

Current deer repellent is not really a practical option for large areas, it's too expensive and logistically very difficult to arrange for various reasons. Alternatives are being investigated.

This is a thread about tahr though; let's keep the 1080 dead-horse-beating elsewhere

Can you find anyone since like, the 1950s, blaming major erosion on ungulates?

many people dont trust them enough to fill in a kill return as it is. what the long term solution is I do not know, but pissing off the very people who are contributing to the solution isnt smartest way forward.
No one knows what the perfect solution is but lets have your suggestion as the way forward. If a person wants to fish for trout or shoot ducks etc they have to buy a licence. What will NZ look like in 20 plus years - will there be a place for recreational hunting. Helicopters and poison are a lot more efficient tools to control pest animals.

I still can't find any other articles to corroborate the initial story (not even on the ODT's site).

Interestingly, the minutes of the last Game Animal Council's meeting give the impression that at least some kind of more concrete relationship between GAC and DOC around game management is being formed:
    https://nzgac.org.nz/sites/default/f...ruary_2018.pdf

With that said, I hadn't heard of the GAC (mainly due to my own ignorance), they seem to have an incredibly low budget and basically zero online presence (no newsletter, no facebook page etc). Fingers crossed with the enactment of the trophies levy, they'll have the resources to make good on their purpose.

I would imagine there are dudes on this forum who have not had the pleasure of a Thar hunt let alone a bomb up.
One of the biggest mobs I recall had around 180 plus animals, we stopped counting. The bulls in that mob stuck out like huge Grizzly bears, what a sight to a cocky 15 yr old carrying an illegal 303. That mob were all fitted into one grassy basin.

Do you have any idea why 'it didn't happen'? Lack of interest from the TIG guys, or DoC?

On “the other forum” there is a thread similar to this, someone rang d.o.c Tekapo or Twizel and asked, was told it happened, they got just under the 3000 they wanted, where it happened and that they are going to do more in a month

This link is to an interview by Kim Hill with Sir Peter Gluckman, retiring Science advisor to the PM. It is insightful and explains the relationship between actual science recommendations / findings, and political policies. Also the need for more public inclusion.

This link is the interview with incoming Science advisor to the PM and her thoughts for future involvement of the public.

These are what I was referring to earlier in this blog @gimp.

Probably already been said but head of the Godley and head of the Dobson is in the National Park. This cull is not going outside the boundrys this year at least. I expect Doc is now reverting back to its annual culls that were policy before Doc ran out of funds for their annual cull about 5 -7 years back and stopped, while putting all their money on the AATH agreement to shoot 5 nannies for every bull taken, and also on recreational hunters bluster they could control them. We havnt, we failed, Doc has been given more funds to get them under controll again. They will.

    End of story.

I’m not sure exactly, but not going to say any more as this thread has renewed my curiosity and I am actively investigating.
