How long are you all stuck inside for? I had a trip down there planned for the 20th to the 30th but had to cancel. Luckily United Airlines refunded my non refundable ticket.

Are law enforcement guys nailing people for being in the woods?

We are in lockdown in my state but no one is enforcing the getting outside just the gatherings larger than 2 people.

Our lockdown is only starting tonight. Government is saying it is OK to go outside and get fresh air. But Police are saying you can only do it locally and should not be driving anywhere to exercise.

    https://www.nzherald.co.nz/nz/news/a...ectid=12319711

Don't even think about driving to the beach or a park for some fresh air once the lockdown starts. That's the message from police commissioner Mike Bush, who told Newstalk ZB host Chris Lynch that people should only go out in their cars to get essential supplies.

"What happens if somebody wants to go for a drive, say to a local beach or get out and about to a local park?" Lynch asked. "Are they in a position to drive there?"

"There's a short answer to that - no they're not," replied Bush. "You only go out in your vehicle if you need to go and get essential food supplies, essential medical supplies or medical treatment. Otherwise, please stay at home."

Bush also discussed how police would enforce the restrictions, whether the army would be called in and how police would respond to a likely rise in domestic violence. Here's the full interview.

If people decide to get in their vehicles and go for a drive aimlessly, what will happen to them if they're caught by the police?

If people don't fit into any of the prescribed categories of why you're allowed to be out there, we'll be out there, we'll be highly visible. We'll be stopping people, we'll be having a chat to find out whether they're compliant. The first part of that is we'll be really educating people and encouraging them to comply. If people don't comply then we'll be using the authority that we have, either under our own legislation or under other law, to ensure people do comply. We don't want to be out there with a big stick. That's not our normal approach. But if people don't comply, that's where we've got to go, because - and I can't say this often enough - complying with this will save lives.

I like the "Born and Raised Outdoors" and "The Hunting Public" youtube channels, Randy Newberg is good too. But I like the Born and Raised Outdoors the most. They put in the hard yards, mostly bow hunting. Hunting elk at 10,500 feet from fly camps. I like their ethos and the way they'll drop anything to go and help a fellow hunter, help pack out their elk with them etc.

I like the born and raised guys too, another is Elk 101- they have a lot of good info on hunting elk and Chasing Moby has a few good hunts out too. Those guys kill lots of black bears if you get an itch to watch that. One I really like to watch is Remi Warren Solo Hunter. He does most all of his hunting by himself and always makes it happen.

Sika roar in the Kawekas last night was enjoyable. 1 group Willie Dudley and his mate 3 days and shot a tree. That makes it real and gives me hope.

@ronlee197 The miles the Born and Raised guys put in is crazy. I'm always surprised how minimal their tents etc are for being at such altitudes....

They seem like a cool group of guys to hunt with.

Been trying to look up that NZ hunter adventures show to watch from the US but all I could find was a preview on YouTube. It looks pretty bad ass though. Can't wait til I can get down there next year for a hunt.

    Howdya Douglas score a tree??

On a serious note the ol’ 303 must have no rifling left - did you see his ‘group’ with all the key-hole bullet holes on the target?

I had expected someone to have put this here by now but I think its a pretty important statement to get out from Greg and the NZH team. I fully agree.

With lockdown commencing tonight we need to make a statement about the position of the government and officials in regards to hunting.

There will be no hunting in the next four weeks. No if’s, buts or loopholes. The hunting community cannot be seen to be flaunting these official directives, whether we think they are fair or not.

Some hunting trips are lower risk of contacting/spreading C19 than others, but the point is there’s still some risk, more than staying home. To justify grinding our entire economy to a halt and so we all come out of this as soon as possible, we need to minimize all possible risk. Can you imagine if we have to extend this lock down period? And it is seen in some way to be caused by hunters breaking the rules?! How do you think the general public will view that! This isn’t a fairy tale, people will die, fellow Kiwis will die.

Non-essential travel means no hunting, going into the backcountry is indefensible, injuries and SAR callouts are always far higher over the roar so don’t think it won’t happen. Even if you don’t have to travel you still can’t go. Even if it’s day hunts you can’t go. You’ll open gates, stop for food and gas, bump into farm staff, potentially get stuck and need a tow out, injure yourself and expose SAR or first responders to unnecessary risk – if it’s serious your treatment may mean someone with C19 died because your arrogance required medical treatment they needed. The potential for extra strain on the health system is unacceptable.

I know a lot of you will say ‘well it’s less risk than going to the supermarket’ – maybe, in some instances, but why have both risks? You can eliminate one, so don’t be stupid.

Our discussions around the matter have already made it to the media so the public eye is on us. This could destroy our image if we’re seen to be flaunting the lockdown - we’ll look like irresponsible hicks with guns who cared more about shooting stinky roaring stags than saving fellow Kiwis.

We’re all in this together and we know that in tough times like this going bush is exactly what we need to cope with it, but we can’t do it. Tell your mates “do not go”, and tell anyone who’s already in the bush to come home. Anyone out there hunting at all just makes it harder for hunters doing the right thing to stay at home – and that’s simply not fair. It’s one law for all, and the future of hunting depends on our how the public see our response to this emergency situation.

It’s a bitter pill to swallow, we know! Not only can we not do what we love most, but this hits us big time in the pocket as well, as we film the bulk of our episodes through this period.

Do not go hunting while we are on level 4. Stay home, sort your hunting gear out, give the rifle a clean, learn a new skill, do that project around the house you needed the time for! And stay connected with fellow hunters, it’s never been easier.

Sums up our thoughts too Micky, the other half was inspired by Fi.

And more should read the letter, it makes good sense.
