The Firearms Safety Code: Seven Basic Rules of Safe Firearms Handling
1. TREAT EVERY FIREARM AS LOADED
- Check every firearm yourself.
- Pass or accept only an open or unloaded firearm.
2. ALWAYS POINT FIREARMS IN A SAFE DIRECTION

- Completely unload before leaving the shooting area.

6. STORE FIREARMS AND AMMUNITION SAFELY
- When not in use, lock away the bolt, firearm and ammunition separately.
- Never leave firearms in a vehicle that is unattended.
7. AVOID ALCOHOL AND DRUGS WHEN HANDLING FIREARMS
- Good judgement is the key to safe use of firearms.

My wife recently renewed her fal & when he inspected our security he saw that the bolts were in our rifles, he mentioned that they should be seperate & I politely said that's not required under the law is it? Which he promptly said yes that's correct but we are trying to encourage people to lock them away separately.

As long as the ammo is locked away seperate you are good.

It clearly says it in red ....

Like everything, interpretation is key

I have always locked bolt away from rifle .
Thought it was law.
But thinking about it I am thinking it was my old man who drummed it into me from the old days on the farm when rifles were stored behind bedroom door and they put bolts in separate spot away from us kids.

When this was first written only bolt actions were considered. Cant have two interpretations, you would be required to remove the bolt group from semis if this was the law. Storeing ammo separatly is the key statement.

Just as a piece of mind I take the bolts out of the semis as well, except the Ruger 10/22. If a criminal did happen to get into the safe they wouldn't have a rifle that would work.

Yeah while it mightn't be "the law" I still store the bolts separately, better to be pro active when it comes to security I reckon.

Finally my .223 Kid training gun, shooting Sierra 65g Gameking wearing a Luppy 3-9x40 and a Dan Can

Yup i hear you say that any one could have done the job of another, but why not have one of each. Maybe one day i may sell a gun and upgrade a scope but for now we are good to go.
