Tongariro Forest park - 42 traverse

    Hi all,

A buddy of mine wants to head up the 42nd traverse over Queens birthday weekend to do some riding on the quads. I'm keen to spend most of my time deerstalking because I'm playing to the foot-hours game at the moment to cut my teeth and get my first Doc-land deer. Does anyone know what the area is like? I read on the DOC website that it was heavily milled back in the day - is the bush pretty tight regrowth? Any info is much appreciated.

    Cheers

We head to Owhango for a dirtbiking week every year, do quite a bit of riding up 42nd Traverse along the tracks, there are areas being milled, majority of it is pretty thick though, was gonna take my rifle with me this year but the sprog is due the same time of the trip in 3 weeks.

Tell your mate to be bloody careful when riding the 42nd, some lunatics down there, mate hit a quad that was over on his side of the road head on last year, ended his weekend and was bloody lucky to come away with some bruises, his new YZ450 not so lucky though, 4k damages!

Cheers for the info. I'll let my mate know to be on guard - 4k in damages would suck!

Yeah, was pretty much new everything from the radiators forward, as well as cracked frame, when you down there ya should go to the Owhango Hotel for a few quiet ones, awesome bloke that runs it, great spot!

Our crew will be down in 3 weeks, bummed I'm missing it this year!

big area, some of it remote, thick tight bush, few cut over tracks. locals thrash the area but they know where to go. few deer in there tho.
