Heading in on a chopper trip next month, my only familiarity is anything I've been able to look upon the web and goggley earth. If anyone has any advice re hut or hunting that would be great otherwise I'll wing it and see how we go.
Cheers chaps

Should have waited another 6 weeks. September is a hard time in there.
Yea not my choice, mates shouting us for his birthday so just gotta go with it.
Ditch everything bar essentials and replace with bags of coal, pack coal in bread bags and stow right up to your weight limits, use a blanket to wrap your rifle in instead of a gun bag, gun bags are useless as blankets. There are no deer at the hut so get out and about. And I suppose you have seen the DoC alert on track in one direction.
All else mate go downstream an hour and bush hunt on true left deer in the bush and good bush to hunt
If the sun comes out look for a place called “the burn” ,it’s close to the old airstrip above the ngaruroro .dress warm and sit on the shady side of the valley, glassing onto the sunny areas ,long range rig would be best for that area.
Send me a pm with your cell number and I will send you a map....spent 3 months in there several years ago July to September...will be hard hunting..
I don't know what you guys are on about haha I was there in October one year we left Harkness hut and walked up to Tussock and it was the hottest dam day it was 30 degrees and we even had whirlwinds hitting the clay pan and when we got to the hut there was a box of speights left in there and we couldn't help ourselves drank a beer each and had a sleep on the massive deck . Was crazy. Saw deer anywhere between Harkness and about an hour south of tussock . Mainly on the bush edge like has been mentioned. Good luck enjoy your trip

Yea I do know what you mean we flew in same time the year after to otutu hut and it was snowy and cold there I actually got colder there than I ever have tahr hunting in June in the landsborough . And then 4 days later the snow had gone and we slept under the stars camped over by the burn and expecting to wake up with dewy sleeping bags but it was warm and dry as . Crazy bit of country for weather extremes

Head up towards Otore saddle and bush hunt around and downstream on true left.
Follow the track that goes from Tussock over the hill to the Boyd hut. When you get to the river, don’t cross, turn left and follow downstream, you’ll see it on the left, maybe an hour. The creek/valley just before the burn is worth a look, and an easy circuit back to tussock.
It’s a beautiful spot. Went in there a few years back in November, but September will be a different kettle of fish. Sunshine and north faces are your friend
Cheers for the advice guys, hopefully be able to provide an update in a few weeks
