On a wire rack is best so air can get all around it. Once it drys off on the outside you can pretty much do whatever with it..

Hmmm, I don't have space in the fridge (or the gear) for that sort of aging setup. Bugger, will have to look into that. Will it still be ok in one big ball of meat in a pots steam tray like mentioned??

good stuff, that is one deer you will never forget. I still remember my first deer like it was yesterday not 35yrs ago. if you can it is best to let it hang over night and set, if you can't take the whole animal the best cuts are the back steaks, eye fillet and back legs the rest is only good for sausage.

Great read, Matt, there's nothing like that first one. I still remember the adrenaline, it was easily more intense than when I went skydiving. Easy.

Just a tip with the meat, avoid putting water on it. Water is full of bacteria, as odd as that seems. your meat will keep longer if you don't get it wet. It won't be an issue this time as you've got it in the fridge quickly, but next time youre out for a week and you shoot one on the first day, keep it dry. Use a bit of grass to clean it, that's a good alternative.

    Thanks for that tip phillip!

Ok, so I spent the last two hours going through my pack and trying various setups. Got the sucker down to 15kg's with a days food but without the tent. That's including the rifle.

Will buy a lightweight 2man tent so can add 1-2kg's to that. So let's say 17kg's with a couple days worth of food. No water but there's a 3litre hydration pack inside that I can use as I go.

I reckon I had 30kg's in it yesterday, before I added the meat. I was fucking retarded, but lesson well and truly learned. Just took so many little things and boy did it all add up.
