Walk the western walkway from lake Okareka towards the lodge at Okataina. Another place is Waka forest at night whilst mountain biking. Best time is pre dawn or after dark on the walkway. You’re not meant to shoot doc land after dark if that’s your intention. My neighbour is the regional roo boss and they employ contractors with thermals. Almost impossible to get a ‘tag along’ invitation due to H&F regulations.
Yep, get a doc permit, head up Miller road at Lake Okareka, walk 100m down track and then NW up onto the plateau. Turn northwards across to point 575.
Haven't been there for a long time but used to see the odd one up there. Be ready for a deer too.
You could also try asking at some farms in the area or down south of town around waikite.
Thanks alot will try go for a walk cheers
Cheers mate
A few years back (maybe 10) I spoke to Rotorua DoC and the guy I talked to gave me the names of a couple of farmers who didn't mind the right people shooting on their properties. Might be worth an ask.
Experience. What you get just after you needed it.
Thanks for that mate

Stayed at Lake Tarawera for a couple of days this week. Saw two dead ones on the road, and one live one early in the morning on the lake road, which nearly nearly didn't make it off the black strip before getting a Hankook MT right up him.
If you want big numbers of wallaby, you're going to need access to private land. If you just want to get one or two, I would be reasonably confident of achieving that on any area of public land that's open for hunting around Rotorua.
Rumpys suggestion is a good one if you are looking at pubic land options. I used to see them often enough on the track and managed to run the odd one over on the road coming home from a run in the dark.
Another option is Lake Okataina – drive down the road leading to the lake and take your pick. They won’t be far from the grass.
If you have a boat then Tarawera is a good option.
If you really get stuck then PM me then I’ll pass on some property details in Okareka that I’ve shot them on in the past. They may let you onto their place (you will have to do the leg work) and I can almost guarantee you will see them. Mind you that was 15 years ago when I lived there!
There are heaps in the pines around Rotoiti too. I went for a daytime wander just exploring and bumped at 5 or 6 in 15 minutes all with 200m of the lake edge.
Tarawera outlet camp ground, many dozens. Nearly caught one by the tail while the mrs shone a torch in their eyes and I looped around behind.
