Hey team,
Has anyone ever kayaked down the wanganui river and hunted along the way? Is that even aloud?
Just thought about doing something abit different, I was looking at launching from taumarunui. Thinking a late spring.
Cheers Bevan

Hunting is not allowed for part of the year, details should be on the DOC website somewhere.
If you're after goats then go for gold. A LOT of people kayak during the warmer months. The bush is wet, quite tight and pretty average all round.
I won't be going back personally but other people might love it!
Checked the DOC website, closed for hunting from 1st October to 30 April.
Yea thought so.
The rest of the year I think the river is in the shade
Just make sure you know what is DOC land, and what is private/Māori land.
It’s hard to tell from the river as you’re drifting down, unless you have gps co-ords.
Worth a look hunting up from the bottom of the bridge to nowhere; and a few other spots.
Go slow, there’s some huge drop-offs/canyons in there. Like negative southern alps if that makes sense?
Spectacular part of the country, and yeah, bloody cold.
I remember pulling up to the John Coull hut one evening. It was well below freezing, and some bugger had stolen the fireplace.
Is there quite a bit of tourism on the river normally?
Yea and limited campsites/beaches which are all owned by doc.bookings(and payment) required in that period
It's classed as one of the Great Walks (should be great paddle?) and the booking season is between the same dates, so I assume it's because of the number of tourists on the river.
I read somewhere recently of someone being told not to take their rifle as the police had been called by DOC rangers in the past.
I have only hunting out of Wanganui twenty odd years ago.
