Some advise I got was look for things out of place, meaning most things in the bush are vertical, keep a keen eye for anything horizontal has worked for me. I had the same problem you have my own personal advice is to pay attention to everything you have read on this thread. Cheers and don't give up.

Sounds like you've hit the "hot spots" and feeding zones. Try checking out adjacent areas as these will be where they're bedding down to cud. Red deer need to eat 3 times a day so are either in their feed zones,walking/browsing to their bedding areas or bedded down. If there's open slips or grass try to set up where you can shoot these comfortably and wait. Good luck and yes slow down your stalk - walk 10 paces, stop, listen, smell, scan.

As a final comment, you don't shoot them sitting on the couch so getting out and enjoying he bush is always a start

Next time you bump one, try giving a few fawn bleats. If it hasn't smelt you, quite often it will stop. I've used this on numerous ocassions and sometimes you can call them back giving you a chance to get a good look so can decide to take it or not. I've had stags and hinds react the same way.

Well I went a day or two too early, I thought the fantastic forcast would have melted most of the snow in the bush but no,AND who ever ordered it ordered extra crunchy, quiet stalking impossible but found some fresh sign and smelt one and later on spooked one but didnt get eyes on either of em.

Great advice guys. I have been keeping an eye on this thread as I am a new hunter myself. Its great to hear from experienced hunters on what "the right area" actually is!

Got a break in the weather here this weekend, so hopefully get out for my second hunt!
