Got a mate who qualifies for the longest distance kill shot ever on an animal as he touched off the 270 by accident when unloading it after blanking and a bull moose in Alaska dropped dead.

Happy to shoot deer out to 400m with my .308 and a rangefinder but thats it. Shot goats out to 750m a few years ago but had more practice with the rifle and adjusting for drop and wind.

When I had my 300wsm I was comfortable shooting at long range. 775m was the longest on deer and goats. Lots of practice and ideal conditions. If it was too windy I wouldn't take the shot.
Sold that and am now enjoying getting up close and personal with the 223 and 308. I won't push the 308 past 500m, once again only taking those longer shots in what I deem ideal circumstances.

So you sold the wsm. You might need a name change.

@blip - I'm about the same as you - 200- 250m is plenty. I like to be real certain that I'm actually shooting at an animal, and that I'll not cause any unnecessary suffering. I'm a softie like that.

Well it all depends on what rifle I'm using at the time.
    6.5CM I'd go to 300m
    6x45 about 300m
    223 roughly 300m
Give or take a few m's either way

    How close ?

I was hunting with a father/son combo when a fallow hind jumped up and ran between the father and I leaping into the air at chest height

I grabbed it mid way and dragged it to the ground, a knife settled the score for good

The dad looked rattled and i could hear the kid crying somewhere

We looked up to see him 20 yards away terrified that his father was hurt

We had ripped clothes from the sharp hooves but otherwise cool as

That’s the closest one I ever got

My father (when he was young) jumped on a deer in its bed below a bench when bush stalking. Said he had to watch out for the flailing hooves as he dealt to it with his knife.

Both the above are good, but not Bunji-level good!

Back to greater distances, I have the small Leupold 1.5-5x20 on the hunting rifle by design. If I can see to take a deer cleanly then I can. The scope and my eyesight decide. That seems to set a 250m upper limit if the deer are both large and fully broadside, otherwise inside 200.

I always miss if I'm too close. Instead of creeping up I creep away a bit.
