If I were in your position I would probably head for the main Ruahine area. Lots of animals and reasonable access. I don't hunt there so can't give specifics sorry. But talk is there are plenty there.
He’s bang on, before it snows get up into the tops and glass at first light and last light. Keep glassing until you see a stag or move slightly to open up new country. Don’t move too far once you have found a gulley with sun, feed, water and cover.
If you want a 'decent' stag then you are wasting your time in the Kaimai's, I have yet to get a 'decent' stag out of the Kaimai's after hunting there for 40 years and living there for 30...been a few 4's, 6's and 8's pulled from there recently that I know of and probably a shit load I don't know about.
A real piss off is when someone asks where they should hunt and one goes to great trouble to point them in what one thinks is the right direction only to have them come back and tell you they went somewhere entirely different...bring a box of Cody's and loosen my lips.
