Yeah I shot one when I ran a well known station up the Clarence . I think your Fallow has damaged his antlers somehow , the red stag I shot had a purse and bulls but had only small bumps that could be felt under his skin on his skull. He was in fantastic condition and a struggle to get out too the ute. He didn't hold any hinds or roar and wasn't all pizzled up.

yes many of us elder buggers can tell story's of all the abnormalities we have come across - from sheep cattle and deer - farming lambs with two bits -etc - happens occasionally farming - some real weird - nut damage early and yup that causes permanent antler damage - but does not seem to damage eating quality - remember some of the early lamb stuff where the practice was to ram the poor buggers nuts inside and then put a ring around his sack and grow him into a big fat bugger to be sold - damn delicious

Next time, be sure to ascertain it’s preferred pronouns before you shoot it….

He said they can grow very big because all the goodness is going into the body of the animal instead of growing antlers.

or squish cords so was infertile but still grew out like a ram/bull

From memory, Hummels occur from fawns being removed from their mother (hind) too early- perhaps the hind was shot or died or something else happened but if the fawn does not stay with its mum long enough it can stunt the groeth of the Antlers later on. Not sure if it is a hereditary trait too, but they can definitely breed.....

So reading that bit would be music to ears of folks milking deer.we can buy deer milk cheese here in Geraldine.i can see advertisement now....eat your cheese and grow big n strong....or horny lol

I shot one up behind Dairy Flat 25 years ago, a red stag that had no balls nor a scar where they had been, no pedicles but did have a pizzle. I've a photo of it at home somewhere, I'll see if I can find it.

It was a big bodied animal, and was running in a mob of 6, hinds mostly.

It tasted fine.

Hummels are antlerless red deer stags. This abnormality has been attributed to poor feeding conditions which result in failure by the deer to grow complete pedicles. Incomplete pedicles lack the potential to develop normal antlers

found this with the build up in deer may see a few more ??- mate back from south Te Urewera said deer they shot were very poor condition- in saying that though this fallow could still be antler damage from early velvet - they are hard on fences especially as some on here have said wire netting and fallow not a good mix

actually saw an anterless red stag holding hinds this past roar..apparently there are a couple running around on property.... they would be first on the culling list for me.

A mate came across a bunch of 5 what he thought were decent fat hinds a couple of weeks ago.
Watched them for half an hour thinking there would be a stag with them, then noticed they all had bumps on their heads (hummels he thought).
Shot one and it was hermaphradite.
Dont know if the others were as well. weird.
Fat as.
Kind of speculating whether they could interbreed.

Shoot one a few years ago. There seem to be lots of theory about how it occurs. some say its hereditary and that they can breed so if that's the case it's good that is dead
I shoot mine up the Haka and it was all eaten at the Toby Shoot we hade up there later on that year they still taste good

Yep Humells exist. Id say that's not one from the shape of the knobs. The one massive red I seen had two smooth rounded knobs on its head. People wont believe this but i stood within 2 meters while it roared its head off. Massive animal, walked past smelled me looked back and I said Boo . He crashed away like a fast Clydesdale.
