There seems to be fewer pronghorn around. Saw around 75 - 100 driving up from Utah, but that was the middle of a hot day. My son ended up shooting a nice buck in 93. 84 should be ok they actually increased the tag quota for that area, but will see when we hunt there next week. We are off for a week hunting elk tomorrow.
Got a cow elk last weekend. Cut fresh tracks across the road, tracked them about a mile and caught up to the heard. Was able to shoot one at about 150 yards through the trees as they fed out into an opening.
So apparently shooting them is the easy part, carrying them out it where the hard work start? How much do you think she weighed?
To be honest the packout wasn't bad at all. We were able to drive my truck closer, and we had sled to pull most of her out with. We do the "quick quarter" here. Just cut all four legs off, cut the back straps off the spine and cut out the tenderloins, or fillets, from inside. My wife carried the back straps and loins out and I carried a hind leg out on the first pack out. Then drove closer, and took the sled in. Was able to pull the remaining three legs out at once. Definitely can't do that without snow. As far as weight, according to Dr Google the average weight for a cow elk is 500-600 lbs. She was on the smaller side, probably 2.5 years old, so maybe 4-500 lbs?
