Good old 7x3, if only he hadn't broken the tops on one side!

Nice Large Red hind after slogging up 3/4 of the way to the tops up Kiko rd 15 years ago. It was in the bush in a sunny spot a couple of a hundred meters off the track. Ruger 270 (wooden stock) Don't see that many reds there now, but I hunt mainly in the bush for Sika now with a Sako 243. Was pretty young so It was an awesome feeling only to be bettered by my first 8 point Sika stag.

My first was a Sika back when cameras were mounted on tripods, were covered in a black cloth and had a handheld flash. I was 13. Awesome trip into the Kaimanawas for 2 weeks. Saw heaps of deer, but we only killed for meat. My first glimps of wild deer were 5 Sika stags on the hillside just up from camp. Hard to believe now. Had a bow and arrow also, and I had one lined up in the teatree, but only it's arse. Didn't fire. Great memories.

Cheers mate, there was actually a good story behind him. He was a well known stag in the area and lots of people had been chasing him through his prime (including my old man). We found scar tissue from where it looked like he'd been shot years before with a superficial hit. I first saw him when I was 8 while out hunting with my old man and back then he was a monster. And then 4 years later stalking through the bush with one bullet in the gun and the bolt open and back as dad made me carry it we get to within 40 m of him. Had to shoot through thin sticks of a dead branch but the old rem my 700 .270 hit him spot on taking out the artery at the base of the heart and he only went 50 m.
