My old beat up Marlin 795 will outshoot 3 of my mates 10/22s,find the right ammo and they are deadly little guns.

MMMM not sure about that. Didn't think much of the stock and the trigger wasn't nice. But there seems to be a lot of fans here.

Well, certainly true for the USA.

The 10/22 has a great magazine but accuracy generally sucks compared to the various Marlin semis.

There are plenty of DIY fixes for the typical anti-lawsuit factory triggers. Mine cost about 10 minutes and an old floppy disc spring to fix.

This does not include the 795 variants.

I bought my first .22 in 1990 as soon as I hit 15. It is a Marlin model 60 S/A 18 shot tube mag. And it's still in the safe. awesome rifle,

I have both the marlin 795 and a mod 60 deluxe.
Both are suppressed and like anything Cci. They can shoot a ragged hole at 50m around the size of a 10c piece.
I have been shooting the 60 out to 200 on silhouettes with subs at club comps and having a ball.

When shooting paper at 100 and 200 with subs (haven't tried hi velocity ammo yet) it is surprising I can hit anything beyond 100. Groups are generally shit due to a number of factors. Wind, ammo and possibly with subs being in the barrel to long.
Technique has to be spot on to print a reasonable group at 100 even then you will somtimes have a dicky round that will fly out of the group.

Have a 990 of similar vintage, it's much much nicer than my other more modern mag fed 795ss and 70pss, although the detachable mag makes it a little more practical from a safety perspective.

I'm chuckling a1ay to myself reading this.
I was in the same boat with my 10.22 .
accuracy was pretty average and I wanted an accurate semi auto.
so out the gate with the ruger and after a lot of homework I bought the model 60 deluxe.
got the trigger lightened and it's a little ripper.
it's way more accurate than it should be and the deluxe version is actually nice to look at as well.
I think I paid less than 5 hundy new.
it's just as accurate as my 455 and lithgow crossover if not better.
    my 2 cents anyway

Had several Marlin semi's as well one being the 995 ( if my memory serves me well) and yes it was more accurate than the Ruger but I liked the flush magazine on the Ruger as it didn't hang up in the scabbard on the bike. I used supersonic in the Marlin as it cycled better with that ammo.
I think the 995 was dropped for the 795 but not sure on that but the action and barrel were the same. The 995 was nice and short so it to was good in scabbard but the 7 shot mag stuck out a bit.

My own view of the Rugers is a good design especially with the magazine and action, (less so with the stock) but the best idea they had was to be able to "pimp it up". My biggest issue is the quality control. There was a period in the 90s where QC went out the window as the made them cheaper and cheaper still. They used to cost two weeks wages in the 80s now they are down to two for a weeks wages. Something had to give...and the first one I ever owned showed me exactly what gave. I got one of the ones made "at 5 minutes before knock off on a Friday" and it showed. I struggled to get a 6 inch group at 50 yards on a good day. (Benched with a good quality scope) Turns out the barrel was .22 at the chamber end, went down to about .21 two inches from the chamber and went back out to .22 two inches in front of that. In effect I had a four inch barrel with a 12 inch solid steel flash suppressor with minimal clearance (just enough to interfere with the bullet but not enough to do anything constructive...)

    I have a stunningly accurate 10/22.
But the only thing made by Ruger thats still on it is the bolt and hold-down bolt. And magazines.
Best thing about the 10/22 is all the aftermarket bits. I have a rifle that fits me perfectly, and is reliable AND accurate.

Had a 795. Felt like crap to hold, shitty magazines (IMO) and scope creep.

The ability to 'pimp' is like the plastic toy in a happy meal. Something to take your mind off how bad the actual product is to begin with.
